Theoretical means relating to the principles at play as opposed to studying their applications. Literally every scientific/chemical/physical/astronomical discovery is based on how things interact. That's called evidence. We can directly test for gravity. We still can't explain why it exists and it's literally everywhere. We're swimming in evidence and it's less explained than something so far away that humans couldnt reach it in 50 generations. Most people accept Newton's gravitational model and it's literally proven wrong, but that's not strange
