it does neither, i'm assuming this is the only way it hooks up. probably pulls info from your cars computer. not sure about older models of cars though.
@Split to thread. you know more about cars & things of that nature.

That's right where OBD-II ports are on cars, so yeah it's pulling info from your ECU. It probably looks at your throttle and brake position sensors so they can get a feel for if you drive well or like a frightened grandma, I doubt they look at much more engine data than that

I know they're GPS enabled, so it's getting speed data as well as typical routes you take, so they look at problem/ high risk areas you drive through etc

It'd have to be hardwired into your wiring harness

They probably just use the GPS data instead
