Default Attn: Beatmakers, Producers & Co

Question to all my prosperous and respected producers out here,

Anyone had any experience with creating beats for rappers? What's your experience been like and any tips would be appreciated. I've been trying to reach some specific rappers out there and I wanna just make some fire and then send it to them. Just wanna know how do I go about my way doing this.

You mean like commercial artists? You're inquiring about how to reach them to send them instrumentals, or are you wondering what you'd have to do production-wise to catch their attention?

Tbh I'm just asking for anything really. I have no experience with working with rappers and just want to know what to expect. But to answer your question, yes to both.

Honestly, my own experience is pretty limited. However, I do have a project coming out with my boys. I've sent them over 50-60 beats over the past 2 years and they picked 7. And 3 of those were considered "throwaway" at the time. There really is no rhyme or reason to what your artists are going to want. It's just inspiration, if it hits it will. So just be prepared to be disappointed, constantly.

As far as production wise, I had to start learning how to do these trap patterns to fit in a little better. I also had to commit to using 808's almost exclusively with these guys. They LIKE the boom bap but my boom bap has never been on the level of the RZA's, Primo's, you know... Shit they compare me to.

However, simulating a new trap beat is pretty easy. There is a specific bounce in some trap beats that I can't seem to nail. I can imitate, but there's a really specific trap pattern that I'm missing somewhere, I just gotta find out how to duplicate it. I know it when I hear it, just can't nail it.

I recommend going online and just taking a real hard listen at what's going on in the radio.

If I remember correctly, you were the one who went all trap in the last beat battle and I voted for you. Maybe that was someone else... But like I said, I'm not anyone special. Just trying to part any knowledge I do have.

yea wasim had the dope bounce with the 808's in the one battle, i just remember a lack of snare, which could still work with a rapper though

but yea man rappers are hands down the worst human beings alive in my experience

only 1 rapper i've worked with thats never disappointed is luck

in the sense that i have to be selective in what i send him, because he'll rap over whatever i send lol. if that makes sense

where as others can be retardedly picky, but my style also doesn't lend to being easy to write to and rhyme on.

i made most of my connections on these forums throughout the years. i also put out beattapes that got traction, even pirated and re-uploaded but they were kind enough to keep the text file i included with each tape that had my e-mail so i got contacted that way

but yea if you got dope beats, just send them to rappers. rappers love free beats.

if a rapper says they are going to use it, say cool sounds good, and just be prepared to never hear back from them lmao. its kind of like any creative endeavor, you might feel inspired in the moment, but if you put it off you might not hear it the same.

with beatmaking it can be samples. ill hear something like WORD I'MA KILL THIS, but if i don't mess with it immediately and listen to it and mess with it the next day my spark is gone

same with rappers, they might dig a beat, but when they put the proverbial pen to pad it might not work

unless you find a dude like luck. then you just figure out their sound and even though your just sending beats, your sorta PRODUCING because you know how they are gonna approach it

but word, just look for emails and contact them.

let them know you dig their work and attach a beat or two for them to check out and see if they want to collab

you throw enough hooks in the water you'll reel in a fish

haha sometimes the clap feels right, most samples i use it sounds out of place. that was some smooth 80's shit with the seinfeldish bass guitars and shit, and just the overall vibe of it a snare wouldve been abrasive the clap kept it moving

but word, these were both beats i was holding for my next tape that never happened, so i gave all the beats to him and he killed em all.
