Jay had a lyrically sound and poignant verse on Renegades, but his delivery on the track is what derailed it. There's a way of writing and delivering lines in a certain order and manner that makes the listener pay attention. It's the equivalent of having a good film with poor editing. Great story, decent acting, but the editing makes it hard to follow. Em on the other hand had an amazing flow, was more entertaining lyrically and stood out more. Jay killed himself on Renegades.
This question is bullshit to ask anymore. Rap's too old to have a universal best. You can run off a top ten of people who have held the spot at one time or another. Em, Jay, Mos Def, 3000, Pun, Pac, Biggie, Meth for a minute maybe. |
