He isn't wrong.
Doesn't really matter if what he did steered the group or not as much as the psychological impact it had either way on the group and the setting they found themselves in. No matter how you look at it there's some strong data about group psychology in general even though it's a bit radical. You can kind of see the same development in places where groups of people get together and hierarchies form, maybe most prevalent in middle/high-school. I would STRONGLY advise watching the Stanford Prison Documentary and the Abu Ghraib Prison doc straight after, the Stanford prison experiment have been tied to what happened there a lot and for seriously good reasons as well. Interesting shit.
