I'm a Muslim and every time I hear this I always bring up a famous quote said by the great Islamic scholar Imam Al-Ghazali (Read his biography. Dude was a jurist, theologian and philosopher. Seriously.)
I'm familiar with Ghazali, and I know that not all music is prohibited; nasheeds are okay, and if I remember correctly, there are even some saheeh hadeeth about Muhammad listening to singers.

I'm also fairly sure that most (if not necessarily all, by itself) rap is haraam solely because of its profanity.

“The believer does not defame, abuse, disparage, nor vilify.” (at-Tirmidhi, sahih)

“Men accustomed to cursing will not be intercessors or witnesses on the Day of Resurrection.” (Muslim)
