YOU AIN'T GOTTA LIE TO KICK IT, DANCAKE

glad to hear I'm part of the NC white intelligentsia crowd, though.

nah but it's a classic album tbh. I'm comfortable saying it now. had to build up the courage to call it so quickly, but it is what it is. I feel like people hear For Free and King Kunta and are turned off within the first 3 songs, thus missing Institutionalized, Alright, How Much a Dollar Cost, Complexion, You Ain't Gotta Lie, etc. Not a single subpar track imo, and as an album it flows well.

MBDTF is an apt comparison in ways, just in terms of the grandeur of the album. But I personally thing To Pimp a Butterfly had more vision behind it, more focus, and overall executed pretty flawlessly. At once it sounds old-school and fresh, heavy undertones of jazz, soul, g-funk/funk, etc. It's been on heavy rotation at the oats compound, to say the least.
