i'm starting to get a bit tired of this mentality where the closer something sounds to "90's" rap it deserves more praise.
i know we're all weepy-eyed for the golden age but i have so many friends who refuse to listen to anything or anybody new coming out because of this closed-minded retrospective approach to music. this becomes the norm for "da real hip-hop heads". hence, when artists try their damndest to replicate the sound of music made 19 years ago, it gets placed on a pedestal. looking at you joey. idk. i'm torn because i obviously love that era's music as much as anybody, but it seems as though this over-the-shoulder attitude towards rap could potentially just serve to stagnate the genre.
