killing an animal with your hands (or rudimentary tools IE not shooting them) is a powerful lesson in empathy. when I was in 8th grade I killed my first pig. we trapped it, and I had to pull it out the trap, pin it between my legs (it was writhing vehemently), hold its snout up into my chest and slit its throat. crazy experience that really impacted me to this day, helped form my values of respecting life, stewardship/wastefulness, and empathy.

Most of my fishing growing up was spearfishing, which is also more intimate and meaningful a way to kill an animal than sitting on a pier with a line in the water while you sip a beer.
