She had one of the top five actors-playing-themselves cameos on Louie, for what it's worth. The same is true for Robin Williams, though I thought Joan Rivers' spot was funnier.

Other than that, I had no interest in her.

She, along with Phyllis Diller, Totie Fields, and others paved the way for female comediennes to work "blue" in a time when women weren't all that much thought of in comedy period - let alone with biting wit and double entendres.

The US was also one Carson pity party away from having The Tonight Show with Joan Rivers instead of having that unfunny hack Jay Leno thrust upon it.

You should watch the documentary on her.. it's currently streaming on Netflix.

I am aware. But comediennes rarely are funny.

The standout women barely even would crack the top 50 all time, if we dropped pretenses. Yet when people those kinds of lists, Lauryn Hill and Queen Latifeh and MC Lyte end up in the top 30, just like Joan Rivers and Phyllis Diller and Lisa Lampanelli do on comedian lists.

With acting or singing or writing, things are quite a bit more equal between the genders. But comedy and rap are almost as lopsided as sports.

I don't disagree with you. I don't find many to be all that funny.

That still does not change the fact that those three were and paved the way for a female entry into a male-dominated world. If you prefer all your women to be demure housewives, so be it.

I'm not a sexist, at least not entirely. I simply think objectively that women do not handle standup comedy as well as men. The genre was created by men and tailors itself to masculinity.

Women can be very funny. Parks and Recreation is a great example, one of the few shows ever with very funny and strong male and female characters who play off each other well. But standup comedy isn't built for them, for many of the same reasons (microphone presence being a big one) that rap isn't.

if you dont find them funny, why would you want their way paved into the world of comedy?
