It's a relative thing. You could be making 50k with 3 kids and be considered lower class because of the amount of money it costs to support them. The cost of living in your state also plays a role. I don't know whether you're single or married, but the fortunate thing is you could get child support and not get taxed for it. Unfortunately there aren't any tax credits for people who aren't getting child support. However, it's the wealthy people who end up taking the biggest hits on their returns

yeah maryland is bipolar when it comes to state taxes. I think I owed them a little under $600 this year.
