This happens/happened quite often to top battlers throughout text's illustrious existence. I'm guessing he thought you dropped wack and was shocked you defeated him. That's usually the reason. Can't lie. I've done it before as well, on many occasions. Probably any kind of combination of style preference, dick riding, home site advantage, etc.
