Also we can only see 3 dimensions. So a majority of space we couldn't see or comprehend no matter how big it IS

not to mention alternate dimensions within the multiverse

it is not infinite.
it may even be collapsing. read more hawking and sagan.

or it may be expanding, but the question remains what is on the other side of this magical wall where space ends

u·ni·verse
/ˈyo͞onəˌvərs/ Noun All existing matter and space considered as a whole So basically everything in existence is the universe. Which means there can be no outside right? |

Edwin Hubble discovered that space is expanding and theoretically always will.
We measure the distance of stars and galaxies with the period-luminosity scale and then observe bodies that emit light in galaxies(stars) which can be split into its component colors on a spectrum. Lines then appear in this spectrum in particular patterns depending on the elements in the light source. Yet if the light source is moving away, the lines are shifted into the red part of the spectrum. Analyzing the light from the Spiral Nebulae Vesto Slipher found that nearly all of them appeared to be moving away from Earth. Slipher knew that a shift toward red suggested the body was moving rapidly away from the observer. But he had no way to measure the distances to these reddish bodies. Hubble used this to ***lulate the ratio of distance to redshift was 170 kilometers/second per light year of distance, now called Hubble's constant. Edwin Hubble and Vesto Slipher have mathematically calculated the distance at which a nearby Nebulae travels towards the "exoskeleton of space." Proving that not only is the universe expanding but that it has an edge... Which of course is expanding as well, so the universe will remain infinite until space decides to turn around. As for logic; it's a principle of math. So lets say I believe the universe is expanding; you disagree, so now we deduct opinion from theoretical equations and conclude that neither parties are right because nobody has seen the universe "expand." |

One of you mentioned the dimensions we can see. We know of 4 and can only see three. Length, width and depth we can see and time is the fourth one we know of. String theory says there's 11 dimensions right here right now which means there could be another universe sitting right on top of us.
Here's my theory. Assume there's another plane just like ours with four dimensions. So our plane plus the other would equal 8 dimensions leaving three left over and that last plane has length, width and depth but no time. So the last plane could be the afterlife. |

I believe it is infinite...because for some reason I find it easier to believe than the idea of a finite universe...it just doesn't make sense to me.

yall need to understand thermodynamics. space isn't a thing, it's an absence of a thing (matter).

dark matter and anti-matter are interesting theories, no doubt, and I'm honestly not in any position to discuss them (my "background" insofar as science is concerned is in mechanical physics, which, as we learn more and more, seems to be less and less applicable to astrophysics). I was more referring to the original question (how big is space) as well as the imaginative voyages of multiple dimensions etc. not against any of that discussion tbc, just pointing out a common, fundamental error with that thinking (if space is infinite therefore possibilities are infinite, since there could be all these planets etc etc).

truth. one of my physics professors in college worked for SETI for years, and despite being an earnest believer that life HAS to exist elsewhere in the universe, as a man of science he relented that there is literally 0 evidence for it. unless you count ancient aliens.
problems arise with any idea of infinity, because if you want to apply math (which most scientists do), the use of infinity basically fucks over any attempts to quantify things.

elaborate on this please. why is this thinking a fundamental error?
