She, along with Phyllis Diller, Totie Fields, and others paved the way for female comediennes to work "blue" in a time when women weren't all that much thought of in comedy period - let alone with biting wit and double entendres.

The US was also one Carson pity party away from having The Tonight Show with Joan Rivers instead of having that unfunny hack Jay Leno thrust upon it.

You should watch the documentary on her.. it's currently streaming on Netflix.
