when the romans would conquer a people, they did not care who their gods were, and let them have their freedom of religion. as christianity spread however, rebellions spread with them. rome, weakened on all fronts, couldnt have its populace rebelling as well, so instead of outright quelling the rebellions they started embracing the change. later on with the eastern and western roman empire you get the constantinoples and shit.

but what im getting at is as you conquer a people, you incorporate their religion with your own, so they are not outright stripped of there rituals and practices. you demonise the deities, but you keep the worship, and do it in the name of another.

if i'm a christian and i conquer some barbarian pagans in russia and try to convert them to my religion, and on the winters solstice they always eat these red and white mushrooms underneath a tree that freak there reindeer out, i'm gonna incorporate it to fit and help convert them.

when christianity outlawed psychadelics in these communities a shaman would come by and throw a bag of mushrooms through there smoke stacks/chimneys so the pagans could continue there ritual of eating these mushrooms and tripping balls. over time it evolved into santa clause. you wrap red and white gifts and place them under a tree, they are only psycho active during december 21st to like 26th or some shit. but i got sidetracked

just trying to give an example of the reasoning behind keeping pagan traditions. it was never an evil intent behind it, other than forcing your beliefs on a people in a way that was easier to accept for them

and a few examples of them DEMONISING past religions, poseidons trident, becomes satans pitchfork. goats were a symbol of virility in men, satan is depicted as a goat headed monster with horns. one of the oldest middle eastern religions, i dont think it was sumeria they had the anunaki shit, but one of them had a garden of eden type tale, where the snake was the creator and protector, yet the jewish religion speaks of the snake as an evil tool of satan (who hasnt even been introduced yet or thought of in the bible at this point. its just a random snake, who can actually be viewed as a good figure, because he let them eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. if god is all about us learning why would he withhold knowledge in front of our faces?) but yea they turned the good snake into this evil creature

the list goes on, and its the same with all religions, not just christianity or judaism. they all demonise the previous religions while keeping aspects of it to keep the populace under control
