Why is 'black' capitalized?
 

So it's been about a year of reading news articles and other things and I've always wondered why writers capitalize the word "black" when referring to Black people. It's just a color.

My best guess is because Latino, Asian, Italian, etc. are all capitalized.

But then the question becomes why don't we capitalize "white" when talking about white people?

I've literally read that "this would play into the hands of white supremecists." So it's not done.

You've gotta be kidding me. I'm a liberal but I'm a little bit sick of all this excessive white guilt.

I'm kinda an English nerd that's why this inconsistency is bothering me.

Any thoughts?

I don’t know what you’re talking about on this specific issue, but I hear you on others. They don’t mention that a few of the police officers in the Minnesota things were black..

Granted, everyone who’s of mixed race knows of you’re part black, you’re black. That’s how you’re treated and that’s how you are. Bob Marleys dad was a 100% white British man... you think anyone ever called Bob Marley a white guy? Nah.

Not too long ago, in San Fran I believe an Asian old lady got FUCKED up and robbed by a huge black guy... it was all over CNN etc shortly after that crazy white guy went to all the ‘massage’ parlors AKA prostitution places in Atlanta. So CNN and other media outlets ran with the Asians getting raped, killed etc for a few weeks.. when a black guy did it... it was mentioned but no mention of being black.

Where as of it were a white guy of course they’d mention it... and that’s not out right lying... but it’s close to it and I see what you’re saying. That’s why if you watch all that shit, take it with a grain of salt and then do your own research.

I don’t know, I live in a small city now with a mixed raced family... I basically never watch CNN/MSNBC/FOX

I just read little blurps from time to time on my phone and look at real life. But I do feel you on the white thing, being impartial.. white kid killed by cops... ehh not so interesting. Old Chinese grandma brutally beat on camera, during the few weeks the news felt it was trendy to report on Asian violence. The unlucky barely reported it, and when they did they didn’t mention it was a black guy that did it.

There is such a thing as lying by omission.

I guess the bottom line is if you use these shitty forms of media as your general thoughts and what not... be smart enough to look deeper... I capable, most people on this site are.

But sadly enough I don’t think most of the world is.
