Topic: Believe it or not I’m actually a fan of boxing and am very familiar with this particular image already, it would be relatively easy for me to write about the history of this match and/or the competitors involved but by that same sword it could have proven difficult for me also to put up something I felt did it justice and without getting bogged down in too much of the detail while still keeping it interesting for the reader. This one lends itself to investing yourself into one of the characters depicted fighting, two well known figures that potentially makes the characterisation easier for you both to personify if you go that route. There’s already a clear rivalry and conflict at the heart of it to drive a story forward, making this a good topic, but the true test will be in who flips it better creatively to determine who deals the knockout blow. So how best to handle this one? Not with kid gloves, that’s for sure, I would likely have opted for an emotional rollercoaster of the fight itself or possibly how this ultimately lead to Ali’s decline in later life. You could frame the story around this match, using it as the focal point before shifting the landscape towards the end. The narrative for this one could be from the view of the commentator or watching fan in the audience seeing this unfold. You could give a blow by blow account to Ali’s “final bell” perhaps which would work well. Anyway, time to head to the scorecards… Universe: I thought conceptually this was a good call, the diss topical is often undervalued and somewhat rarely deployed, but when done well it can be a barnstormer of an effort. The prediction about the DQ was pretty spot-on and definitely ‘hit’ for me, probably more so with the on going hooah in the chat thread and subsequent deleting of lines etc. I noticed Scar already commented liking this to fancy footwork and whatnot but this was you confident in your approach and self assured as ever, flexing those respective muscles, making it through those early rounds without seeming to break a sweat. Do I think it was the correct approach to adopt here? Possibly not if I’m being completely honest with myself. As someone who has done similar in the past I know all too well how easy it is for the approach to backfire and have a negative connotation surround it rather than be seen for the fun intended. This is bobbing and weaving, treated more like a sparring session, getting in and getting out of range quickly, taunting the opponent and playing with them rather than looking to land that out and out victory by demolishing them. That isn’t to say it’s not entertaining to watch, far from it, I enjoy it for what it is and let’s be real here - there are few left doing it to this standard, consistently. Consistency is key to these week in, week out leagues, anyone can beat anyone in a one-off fight but it’s being able to outperform the rest of the pack consistently that keeps those P4P fighters ahead of the field. Brokenhal0: it’s unusual to see a single diss topical, but I think two is completely unheard of in all my time doing this. This may well be a first. I think you opted for a similar approach to Uni here, you knew he was going the distance and so you felt you had to match him punch for punch. It’s definitely a hard fought contest, where durability is tested, and both you guys must feel exhausted after this slugfest. It became a brawl towards the end with both throwing punches and maybe looking for that power shot to fell your opponent, I don’t feel like either were willing to throw the towel in here and were happy for it to go to the judges scorecards happy with the effort they put in. It’s a shame about the circus that ended up surrounding it, for what it’s worth I read everything Hal0 put down originally - pre-edit - and don’t think the lines Frank removed hurt him too much, but it is noticeable on a second read for sure. Anyway, back to the cards, I scored it in favour of Universe here overall. You have to say props to both for the effort you guys put into this. You literally outwrote a good 75-80% of the league, if not more, and it puts the late showers and noshowers to shame for real. Keep those pens moving. |
