We have made it yah'll....almost 16 weeks complete.... yah'll the shit. This has been a long road & alot of work to get this place back to what it once was. This week we have a new NBL champ & its @Tic congrats u slimy big nosed bastard, he won a dope pic battle w/ des, shit was a good read. This mag will have touched on alot of different things Fight nights, shadow boxing & shit. Ight so lets get into this week u musthafuckas.

Here we GO. 16 weeks. 4 uninterrupted months of NBL and DAMN we've come along. Props to all of you who have participated, it's been dope and making me look forward to the playoffs. Let's get into our last regular season mag.

Champ Match: Tic vs. Destroyer

First Pic battle for the Champ Match in awhile that I’ve seen…I thought it was a pretty good battle. We both had some nice lines, I personally liked Life Alert and the opener could’ve been dope, it was just really stretched IMO. Voters thought Tic took this one.

Props to Tic taking on Des in pics in a high stakes battle like that. I honestly thought Des had a big advantage because I never seen Tic pic battle before. Honestly Des wasn't as good as I thought he would be but he didn't try to sway or anything. Tic wasn't too great here but his Snap out of it and Lean lines were nice, while Des went for more humorous stuff like his Doctor Seuss bar. Though he definitely sets the NBL single season record for most references to Master of Disguise with this verse, there wasn't that much there outside of his red spot line which was cool. Pretty light battle but Tic got it convincingly with his verse. Props to him for managing to champ NBL.


Contender Match: Cred vs. Fraze
Cred wins by Split Decision

This was an OK matchup. Cred ended up edging it in a close one. Both had a couple nice bars and a few ok bars with sporadic misses. Cred had the Street Fraze line which was dope and Fraze had the Hammer in ya Face line which was also dope. I thought Cred took this one, but it was close. I’ve seen both drop better as well.

Another close one. First off, props to Fraze for keeping his issues with voting under wraps til votes were in cause I understand where he's coming from on that. Tbh I see reasons to vote for both but I've seen so many battles that being personal makes it work a lot more for me. And IMO fraze had the personals to take this one. The murder raps line was dope and I honestly thought the Cred rates line was slept on hard... Cred was clean with his usual style and generics with the lone nameflip (street fraze) was alright. I thought cred was consistent but fraze did enough to win for me – if I wasn't away this weekend I prolly woulda given him a vote. But still, close and understandable finish to a tight battle, good shit from both.


Odd Ways vs. Knuck

Knuck No Showed on some fucked up shit. But it’s whatever….Odd Ways had a pretty decent verse. Couple bars I didn’ t get, honestly, but that Tempur –Pedic bar was pretty nice. Bitch made was pretty good too. Odd usually has a lot of good concepts, but has a tough time executing them. I think he had better execution this time out and wouldn’ve made a nice battle with a Knuck who doesn’t seem to be as motivated.

Lotto vs. Spree

Mannnnnn this was disappointing. I’ve seen both of these dudes drop some good stuff, but not last week. Neither the concepts nor the wording was there for either of them. Lotto had the Hitman line I thought was pretty nice though, and Killing just wasn’t on it this week. The opener / scratch / casket was worded decently, but the concept has been done a lot. Idk guys, it just wasn’t Fresh this week. Lotto ended up taking this.

I had the same reaction as Tic – this coulda been a LOT hotter. I like both battlers for different reasons and the two different styles coulda made for a good battle. This just read like an off week for both. I understand why both guys got votes and really I had to go back and forth on this one when voting. KS had much better wording while Lotto had some creative ideas that didn't get the execution they woulda needed to really sting. The voting pool tended to feel Lotto's concepts added up to a slightly more effective verse, and while I agree I could easily have seen it gone to Spree. Off weeks happen though and its not like both of these guys can't come back with fire this week, hoping they dont slack going into playoffs.


Strika vs. Murda Sho

This was a dope battle as expected. Both had some fire bars and a couple ok ones. I thought the Gotham City line from Shoe was fire and so was the iG app line. Strik’s opener was nice and the Eagle / Fruit line was also dope. He has a style very similar to Cred, imo. Murda got the nod from the voters, although Strik started coming back towards the end. Strik ended up using being sick as an excuse….I guess we will have to wait until next time to see.

I think I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for Strik which is why I let him back in NBL against my better judgment. Definitely the right move here. Tbh I dig his style a lot, and done right it comes out like that Eagle to the Fruit line. Appears to be simple but is very clever and creative. Dude's nice, but same can be said for Murda. That belt/needle concept was hilarious and the LOTB for me. This probably coulda been battle of the week if they went for more than 10 here but I ain't complaining for this one. Definitely a good one but most voters thought Murda was just stronger here and I gotta agree. Still dope.

Another No Show…Chyeaaaa had a decent verse. I wasn’t as crazy about the Hush line as everyone else, but it was nice. I thought the stick shifts line was nice too. From what I’ve seen, it was one of your better verses thus far. Keep it up.

Props to Chyeahhh for taking the NS win and dealing with the rematch (sorry man I didn't set it). Last time he did 16 against Wanderer's hair which leaned me hard. This verse was more of a standard verse and while it didn't disappoint, it's a shame seeing it go to waste. But cest la text.


King Karaoke vs. O. Lineman
Karaoke wins by Split Decision

This was another dope battle. Thought both of you had some fire bars and a couple misses. O had the King Lawler line which was dope, Lama the Lime was pretty cool, a couple self-hype bars and the closer was a miss. Had he stayed away from the self-hype I think he may have taken this. Kar’s opener was LOTB, elephant in the room was lolz and the next 2 were alright. He slipped towards the end really leaving it open for O, but I thought Kar took this, as did most of the voters. Good battle though and O really isn’t rusty….

Dope for a few reasons. First off that Metts is back to battling. Secondly Karaoke isn't totally burnt out after all those W's. Finally that these two get the rematch from last year's Summer Classic (may have been 2 years ago... damn). Regardless, dug this one. Metts is another one of those guys who goes simple but clever and it worked nicely with his Lama the Lime and Lawler bars. Karaoke just can't be stopped right now. Personals generally make for more effective verses and his opener was nice. Even the fat joke had a extra level of being personal. Personally I could see either taking this based on taste but the important thing to me is that both came nice. I agree with the voters. I think Kar had consistency beyond his quotes and it was hard finding a miss in there.


Unfukwitable vs. ill nik-A
Unfukwitable wins by Split Decision

Damnnn. Another dope battle and possibly BOTW, imo. Nik had a consistent verse and Unfuk dropped one of his best. This battle was the closest all week and definitely a good read. Both of these guys came with some nice lines for the most part. That infield-fly line from Nika was fire & LOTB, and unfuk had Tier-jerker which was runner up for LOTB for me. Both had a couple other solid lines and voters thought Unfuk got it. Dope battle, that’s a good look for Unfuk…

I've been talkin up Unfukwitable's concepts since the BA survivor tourney in the Fall. This was just a validation of what I've known already. His wordplay is just getting the boost of being slightly personal and that's a huge difference when bars seem directed at opponents. Nik didn't drop anything like he was sleeping on dude either, Unfuk was just connecting throughout. I didn't like his Tier jerker line but almost everything else hits. Stonehenge and Wolverine were dope IMO. Nik's troubled past and Murda Mook lines were dope too but I think Unfuk actually took it on consistency, which is no small feat. Props to both, this was a nice battle and one of my favorites this week.


Ace vs. Remy Lebeau

This was a pretty decent battle too. Apparently Ace is Resin?? If so, dope to have you back, although you don’t know me yet…Spiral was pretty dope to me & bank heist was pretty nice. I thought Remy had the rainbow line which was flipped nice, caught a charge was also cool. Voters thought Ace got it.

Ace is apparently Resin, yeah. Hasn't been totally confirmed but is believable. This was a close one but wasn't as hot as it could've been. Remy had a the concepts but execution held him back a few times. Ace was nice here. Gambit was a solid hit and he was fairly consistent. Remy had the plot line which was relevant and cool, but overall was inconsistent with delivery and that held him back. Ace takes it 6-2.


Swerve vs. Mr. J

I think Mr. J is still coming into his own style. Not sure if he is a longbar cat by how he puts spaces in his lines, but I wasn’t really feeling his verse this week. I think your wording is a little odd and needs some work, but that comes with time. Good to have Swerve back…He had a couple cool lines like tribute to the SS and graze sheep. Voters thought he took this easily.

Mr. J aka Qwarterz is my guy to watch right now. He's a talented and versatile writer and I haven't really seen him battle competitively before this season but his creativity is showing. Should make for interesting competition soon. Swerve is shaking off rust and looking better as the weeks go along. Wanna see more from him cause he's lowkey one of the best doing it (you fuckers heard it here first). Both guys seemed a little iffy at times though concepts were there in each verse. And that can be fixed up pretty easily. It kind of felt like the sky fall vs the El chapo line, combined with better misses, and everyone voting felt Swerve got it. Enjoyable reads from both and I'm looking to see more.


Orc vs. Amen

This was a pretty good battle. Dre had the Robin victories line and Rainbows that I thought were nice. Orc had his opener (although Dre used a very similar concept on RB) and Celebrity Pics was LOTB for me. Voters thought Orc took this convincingly. Kinda wish both of these cats went more than 10, but it was a pretty cool battle regardless.

Cool battle here, respect to both for personals throughout. Dre's been consistent with showing which I appreciate but it's good seeing Orc in the swing of things again. One of the best at wording, he actually showed up with it here. Personally I dug his Matches and Hush lines while Dre had his snapback line. I think the nonquotes were the difference here, Orc was always alright while Dre wasn't quite so consistent – Burd flips are pretty much all done and this was no exception. Woulda liked to see this one go for more, good battle and props to both but Orc had his shit together for this one.


Pinot Grij vs. Havoc

If Havoc is Alphabet…..no surprise Pinot won by No Show. Pinot had Alf biting and Frankenstein lines which were both nice. It’s a shame he wasted a verse with some nice lines, but it happens. @Havoc why even sign up, bro? You have more No Shows than I do battles probably. Shit’s wack.

Havoc is Alphabet. Talked to him and he apparently didn't know battles were due Thursday... idk. Feel bad for Pinot but Shank is a decent battler when he shows. WHEN HE SHOWS. I think he's noshowed me like 3 times (including one for the Ultimate Writer finals lol) so I know how it feels to waste a verse on him. Props to Pinot for doing his thing, I wanna see more from dude.


IAmRhetoric vs. Bust

This battle was ok. Rhet had the pizza line which I liked, but other than that, a lot of played concepts or concepts that really weren’t all there. If you work on that, you will be good. Bust had ho show-in was which nice, I Am was nice too…NFL line was ok. Voters thought Bust took this pretty convincingly.

Cool stuff. I like where Rhetoric is going tbh. He has good wording and his concept selection has been improving gradually. If he got personal, it'd be harder to call his shit played (hint hint Rhet). His generics are getting more clever as it goes along but still can be basic enough to be looked over. Bust showed he had the experience advantage here, better bars coming from personals. His NFL line was dope and came with a more polished, text-standard verse that got it here. Good battle though. Rhet is definitely improving while Bust isn't slacking like he's done a few times.


Infiltration vs. Ribbit

Fucking GONE @rashinalize. Lmaoroflolz….how old are you, b? That shit killed me…anyway, your style really is more shit talk and rhyming than battling. Take a look at some other verses how they’re aimed at making their opponent feel like trash, not just rhyming words together. Infiltration had a few nice lines in this. Two dimensional was nice, ribbons was pretty cool…suns and guns was decent, but that was like the 3rd gay bar he did. Overall Infiltration took this convincingly.

Well... someone had to battle dude. 2Triple0 has a nicely positive outlook on text and how it fits into the scheme of things but I get the impression he's just flowing for the fuck of it. End of the day I can't fault anyone for doing what makes them happy but his verses generally sacrifice wordplay and punches in favor of flow. Not the worst thing you could do but man he gets to be hard to follow at times. Infiltration was cool but definitely knew what he had to do to win (throw a convincing punch) and did it. I personally dug his two dimension line and he pretty much had a win from then on.

This is something I want to start doing from time to time just to keep the people who may only come here for the NBL abreast on some other stuff going on around the site. First I want to welcome @BROKE LESNAR back to the MOD staff. This guy has some FUCKING INSANE ideas that he will be showcasing down the line, and let me say some of this shit is pretty game changing.. which is saying ALOT in a hobby, like I said earlier.. where we RARELY if ever see innovation. And SPEAKING of Mods.. I need some dedicated brave soul to step forward and breathe some life in the BATTLE ARENA. I think with some time and care it come pop off into a entity in its own. Not only a place for new talent to flourish but a place for scores to be settled and some old fashioned "for fun" battles can go down. At one point their were Pic titles, tag titles, and Battle Arena championship titles being regularly defended and I think we can get back to that point in no time. You don't have to respond in this thread, feel free to PM me with any innovations you guys got, or just to express your interest in helping. Aside from that, as always @Innovator and @Vulgar are doing they damn thing in the respective poetry and topical leagues. So thank you all for taking part in this NBL roundtable. I wanna get each of your views on this season and NC right now. What do each of you think was the league's biggest problem this season? How would you fix it?

No Shows & voting tbh. Have to be very strict with letting people who no show back in the league man. ESPECIALLY if they're known for no showing. Fuck the pitty and internet persona friendship feelings, leave them out of the league. They are cancerous to the culture. As far as votes, you have to be firm as well. Vote deductions as well as handing them L's always works. Not to bring up RB but ILLunatic was a voting Nazi, and would really go ham on niggas who didn't vote by deducting votes the next week and/or handing them L's. For the most part, no one likes L's on their resume, especially if they would have won otherwise.

Honestly tho, can't complain. This is the most active I've ever seen NC as far as battle wise. Good shit to you, Hush and Allen Knight. You niggas really putting forth the effort and it's appreciated and active, dope battles is what comes out of it. So props to you niggas, the niggas who show up every week and drop bars and the niggas who vote! Because of all of you, the culture is still alive.

I think the league has run as smooth as it ever has. Buttttt (and I'm guilty of it too), the voting needs to change. I think a bar by bar breakdown should be done. Even if it's just describing each bar like "ok this is nice -- dope -- nah this is a miss," then a short synopsis of the battle. Otherwise, it's just lazy. People put work into their verses and should get the same respect from voters.

Shiit only been in for a few weeks, n wasn't sure how serious it was but honestly feel like Allen's doing a great job gettin the point across that he ain't gin put up with the faggit shit.. That's dope soooo really the only real issue is prolly voting.. Other than that great job to everyone participating n Puttin in the time to run this shit.. Props

Mag consistency. You guys been rocking w/ those. I'd change the no show and voting rules. Be a lot firmer w/ them as well. 1 no show = Ban for the season. For every missing vote. deduct them their votes in the next weeks battle and NO EXTENSIONS what so ever. Them shits plague the league and fucking suck, tbh. If you sign in, you are basically like signing a contract and committing yourself to something. SO act as if so, and make the deadline. If not, then you shouldn't sign in. Not fair to those who show up on time every week and have to have the league drag out because niggas can't find 10-30 minutes to throw up 10 bars in between Mon - thurs. Dudes are just lazy and procrastinate like a motha fucka and expect people to sit around and wait for them. I hear some people get busy but co'mon. You have MORE THEN ENOUGH TIME during the week from MON - THURS to get a verse in. I work 70 hours a week for the GOVT, go home and i'm a full time dad a long w/ my chick. I typically write as soon as the battle goes up to get it over with and done - do my little touch ups throughout the week and drop when I my opponent says they have something cooked up. So, the "I'm busy" bullshit doesn't sit right w/ me... It;s a sorry excuse to justify them procrastinating, is all. niggas may clown this, but sorry... I've been doin this shit for madddddddddddddddddd long and still to this day take pride in my craft... It;s a hobby in which is done for fun...

You guys were relatively strict, which is a good thing. Leagues fall apart when the modding is lax, and we've all seen it before. Only a couple things that could change:
- No discussion of open battles in chat
- Blind voting
- Deduction of votes for not voting (not sure if I saw this)

Who was your favorite battler to read this season? Did anyone surprise you by how well they showed up (or by showing up at all)?

Allen Knight - is always a good read for me... He's a pretty harsh battler. Knuck (When he shows) is pretty dope and really impressed me w/ his battle of the gun bars w/ murda sho. Ill nika is always a fav. Been readin that dudes bars since the dino-text era lol and he's always keeps me entertained. Kara's dropped some pretty solid verses but the only thing I DON'T like about Kara is his DISCUSSION references. They are just simply corny too me, especially when the entire verse is made up of them. When he goes personal, he's wicked. Hush has dropped a few lines here and there but don't think he's applied much effort. I'd like to see him go up against someone with skills so he can drop them bars he's known for. Tic is always a good read... murda sho is always a good read as well... That's about it... I typically read everyone's shit when I get around too it... Everyone for the most part has been dropping some bombs here and there... SO if I didn't shout you out, don't worry... I read your shit as well... Just brain dead at 7:00AM and can't think of all of you fuckniggas usernames lol... Good shit to all and props for showing and dropping bars.

Either @john hensley or @ill-Nik-a. J. Hens because I've seen a bunch of his past stuff in the Archives and always thought he was one of the best, and also ill-Nik-a because of his concepts. He's really creative and I like how he finds ways to word his concepts. I remember PMing him awhile back about improving and he said conceptssss first, wording second. He holds true to that & he's dope.

@Muff surprised me this season. Perhaps because he was off drugs? He is extremely creative and showed he is a contender against anyone. Good shit.

What do you think was your best battle this season and why?

Probably verses ART, lol. Him and I were going back and forth and I know he was bitter about me handing him the only furious L in shadow boxing. SO he talked mad shit bout how he was going to body me in NBL and I wanted to make sure that wasn't going to happen. I'm very competitive and when I know my opponent is going to give it 100, I tend to try and give it 110, feel me? That was probably one of my better showins this season. Think I've been pretty consistent tho for the most part all season... All I know is, I'm getting to old for this shit lolol...

Either the Contender Match (thought it was heat) last week or my battle with @Cred. He's a cool dude and we both dropped dope that week, props.

Well tbh I wasn't sure how real the league was so my efforts been lacking, I mean text seemed to die out n I just haven't felt the motivation I had there for a while so I wasn't really pleased with any of my battles.. Plus I was tryin some fldifferent shit to see reactions n see what peeps like but I ain't gonna do that no more, it's about what I wanna do.. But if u had to pick a battle it be vs max...

Stop those abusing they board power. Create some type of unity between battlers, poets and topical heads. Everyone's pretty segregated for the most part. It's like topical heads are on another planet and vice versa. Create or tounry's and definitely get a squad of recruiters to flood other sites and recruit people. That entails keeping discussions a lot more calmer with the abuse of new members. We want them to stay and contribute to the culture, not run them away you filthy animals. I know dudes use to try and board jump me all the time and run me away. Shit's wild lol...

Shadow Boxing Reviews

For those of you not aware, Shadow Boxing has been my brain child for some time. It's rare to see new ideas in the txt battle scene so I always wanted to try to provide something different for my NCGs. Born from that was the Shadow Boxing tournament. The only and main thing that seperates this tourney from others is you don't know who you are battling each round. This forces the battler to focus on pure raw punchline power. It's a test and from what I have seen so far brings out the best in the battler. The battles are also released 1 by 1 to further the suspense and help to get more and exposure votes for the competitors. The first Shadow Boxing Finals is currently underway between current NBL Champion @Tic and current gun bar king @murda sho. This shit should be hot man, I really hope ya'll give it a chance and vote on this battle when I post it. With that being said I got some battles for you right now if you missed them. Tic defeated @Allen Knight, and Murda took out @Muff in a pretty heated Semi Finals. There was a ton of confusion and drama behind the Muff and Murda battle, and I want to clear that up now for the 4 ppl who prolly still give a fuck. And anyone who plans to join a Shadow Boxing tourney in the future would do well to pay attention to this next part.. IT IS PLUS 2 VOTES TO WHOEVER SENDS THE FIRST VERSE OF EVERY ROUND OF SHADOW BOXING TOURNAMENTS, AND YES THIS INCLUDES FINALS. It seems no one was paying attention to this rule threwout the entire tourney. So our beloved Muff with his stegosaurus brain goes complete apeshit when he losses to Murda Sho due to Sho having +votes. Sad thing is my short term memory is so shit I don't remember all the details on why Murda had +3 votes. All I know is in the future I will be maxing it at +2. I think there was a situation where Murda had won +2 twice and I cut it to 3. Him or Muff might remember, point is the extra votes make a difference as they should. In a tourney where there are no due dates I need to offer some incentive for ppl to drop early. It was due to this I kept putting the last verse sent against the first verse sent. This is gonna be a great display of the up and coming generation of NC. I know Tic been doing this a while but at this point these days if it aint NC it don't count so he still fairly new round this bitch. Anyway i've seen Tic drop some straight up fire on RB when he was Galactic... when he got here he started kinda slow but started to hit his stride recently and getting back to the quality his verses used to be. Still slightly inconsistent but more on the good side than the bad right now. Lotto really surprised me with a couple of his lines this season. Unfit been dropping some crack lately and I'm starting to see that he's trying to get more and more creative and unorthodox with his wordplay. I can see him dropping some of southpaw wordplay that borders on the lines of a reach and all out dope as fuck and creative... Both should make the playoffs so this is just a lil spar session so make it a good one guys ... Ima say Lotto gonna win just to fuck with Unfuk so he can rip his head off and not just try to edge the battle hahaha... so..

According to Hush Des is the best oldest newest nigga I guess? Whatever I gotta respect Destroyer cause he hasn't been a pushover from ever since I saw him start here. Strikta still rusty but he promised the site he was gonna get back to how good he used to be before he started filming lime is the black. Both of them are capable of edging the battle and also they are both capable of completely bodying each other.. This is one of the battles i'll be looking for... but for consistency purposes i gotta go with Des cause he hasn't stopped being nice Strikta still tryna get back which i really hope he does.

Middle finger to all you nonvoting doucheholes. Week 16. Gotta make up votes to get into the playoffs. If you wait til Sunday you're stuck voting on Sharp v ribbit, a 16 line battle written ENTIRELY in the style of the homie 2triple0. Shoulda voted sooner :)


4. NBL's Prodigal Sons
I can't pick a specific dude showing up to battle that made it dope but we had a LOT and most stuck around. So the vets that are consistently here like ill nik-A, Karaoke, Orc, Muff and Allen Knight (among others) deserve a ton of props in general, but as far as this season goes we had Murda Sho, John Hensley, Junto, Sn00p, Swerve, Metts, Hush and others sign in and stick around, which contributed a lot to this season. Props guys.

3. Muff's Style Change
Whether you dug it or not you have to respect it. You have a dude who's champed the NBL and other site's leagues, been a longstanding member of Dohpe, and is seen as capable of beating anyone just up and saying 'I'm going to try to enjoy this more.' Props to Muff for that, it takes balls. And tbh I think his style shift reminded those of us competing that we got into this through live battles and had an effect on the way some of us write (probably more subtle than changing styles). It even brought gunbars back into vogue and tbph I think helped bridged the gap between RB heads and NC heads. And the cherry on top was that his awkward transitional week was against me so I got the dub and bragging rights on beating Muff.

2. Rise of the New Guys
Without new blood text is screwed. It's that simple. So when new guys show up and do their thing, I gotta give them respect. Cats like Wanderer, IAmRhetoric, iSpaz, fraze and others have been adding a lot to the league and they deserve props for it.

1. Split Taking the Reigns and Pointing NBL Toward Glory
To be perfectly honest there were times when Allen and I thought about just aborting the season in its first two weeks. Mostly noshows, virtually no one with any skill competing, and pretty much no reason to believe it got better. Split aka @Dr Dog pretty much showed up and decided to champion the revival of text battling through mags and completely got it. He gave us the mag format we ran with and the renewed will to get it done so well you just had to sign in and that snowballed into the avalanche we got going on now. So for all the props we get right now I'm positive the league wouldn't be at this point without Split in week 3. Dude is the white texcee response to Denzel Washington in Remember the Titans. This is easily the best NBL season in the NC2 era and Split's intervention here is a huge reason why.
