How To Rap: A Beginner's Guide To Achieving Online Recognition
"Any fool can know. The point is to understand." - Albert Einstein
1.) Starting Out and Avoiding Typical Rookie Mistakes Hop hop is a confession, I can't promise you'll be the best But you can follow these six steps to achieve a modicum of success Remember that gush of fresh air when you were choking out of breath? You started spittin' for the same reason you started smoking cigarettes The hope of fitting in; yet the light you emit probably darkened quick Was hard to admit you loved the art and wanted to be part of it But you dove right in; Understanding a flow is so very tough For an introduction you must accept the fact that you're going to suck Hope you're up for taunts from vets and watching them all tease you Rhyming one syllable at a time with no multi's to read through Every topical seems new; I have some advice to burn Concentrate on aligning words that don't appear to rhyme at first I'll confirm this isn't the time to let spelling consume you How a word is written when you spit it should be irrelevant to you Development's crucial; 'Best' doesn't necessarily have to rhyme with 'Vest' I'll confess my first line, "don't test my hidden machine gun nests" Yes, one mental image can drum up quite the dumb sentence It's a typical line from a newcomer; Simple, and has a gun reference Yet strangely effective, that is until you peel back the whole fruit Cuz real shooters don't rap... and real rappers don't shoot The gun phase is so moot, you won't proofread a post for months Too closed down; Once you do endless possibilites open up If you wrote enough to make your mark you'd have pages of garbage Think your posts are amazing? They aren't, but that's the pace of the process Most will copy their favorite artists, you need to find your own voice Yet the style you're good at may not be your style of choice That's beside the point, working backwards saves plenty of time But for now you should harmonize on the last word of every line Coincide the syllables so they rhyme, don't forget to trim your fat first Condense your rap terms, remember that how you present your verse matters The learning curve never flatters, tie it together and make a knot Anyone tells you they spit this on the spot, trust me, they did not You're seeing a finished product brimming with confidence from the best around These clowns worked on their text for hours, don't let it get you down Invest in yourself, a rap name can run careers to the ground So don't call yourself "Jay" or "Lil" anything if you want to appear profound. 2.) Punchlines and Learning the Complexities of a Verse The time for punchlines is here, you'll think your first one is hot as fuck I remember mine, "a-head of my time", but a clever line is not enough When what you drop is viewed as a failure, most jump off of the roof They stop their improvement, but not caring is NOT an excuse Embrace the possibility of losing, cuz it's definitely a sure thing But relax it's still early, and all your respectability is worth earning This is your shortcut through the weeds, hope you following my steps up Tell a personal story at least once... topicals always get love Don't be a cocky fuck, if a good idea came then type away Why be afraid of something that might never see the light of day? If one of your punchlines seems great, don't shine a a light on that shit Using CAPITAL LETTERS and exclamation points!... way too obvious Don't bother with it, controlling what the reader knows is smarter If they miss something it's on them, the subtle approach hits harder Use dashes-to-slow your bars, feel free to give it a try whenever It looks better and it's smoother for connecting lines together When rhyme schemes get severed don't fall back to your weakness The first word of the next line is all that you need kid 'Did' you understand? Although it should be a last resort Connecting four words can move you forwards, you need to practise more And stay the course; Rhyme the final word for as many lines as you can Do not double back if you can help it, why revise a masterplan? You're now a rapper man, so say something that gets attention But stick to what you know best whenever you spit a sentence If you fake it you'll regret it, they will see right through that noise Remember weaker bars can be disguised by a meaningful voice Call it fulfilling a void, but avoid topics that distract your wit With no warning you'll see multi's forming, often by accident Spotting them is half the battle, continue connecting the dots slow Bridging those pitfalls while cautiously stepping over the potholes God knows making multi syllable bars are basic As vocab raises, rhyming 'get' and 'shit' will even start to make sense It's all in how you say it, rhyming 'eyes' and 'pause' isn't any better But disguise them amongst other words and they'll really fit together Hide a lie between two truths, in practise it works forever Just remember de-feet and urine lines will never be considered clever. 3.) Moving Forward by Working Backwards Once you think of the punchline first, you're on the right track Seems that working backwards is the unspoken secret of rap Pick your ending and keep it in tact, then beef the core back up Save your most relevant set up line until just before the punch You can even add a corny pun, set up lines allow this stuff Sound like algebra? Nah, let me show you how it's done... Example from 'Meme': Concept - "drone" on/talking relentlessly Hook - aerial view Set up --> The gravity of the situation can no longer carry you through Set up --> You fearing the truth, it's scary to you when the stereo's mute Relevant set up --> So if you wonder why I'm up in space staring at you... Punchline --> It's cuz I can only watch you drone on and on from an aerial view Connect --> You don't have a voice like Ariel dude... Then on to the next bar, rinse and repeat about forty times Don't worry about the Little Mermaid reference, wordplay overpowers a corny line Pop culture territory inspires, and famous persons are favored Don't be afraid to pre-write bars and insert them into verses later In simple terms give your ideas a way to gel a bit Now let's make an entire bar rhyme, and have it maintain its relevance... Example from 'Rhymehunter': Teaching seven deadly sins cuz I'm John Doe by choice Screaming heaven let me in but I lost most my voice Each word lines up with a droids precision when remote controlled You need that robot flow to match, as above so below Every syllable is cohesive, one word off would destroy the illusion You have to work hard at the start in order to enjoy the conclusion Class is in session students, all homework is due quick Off color remarks are only read if you don't follow the blue print The key to success is prudence, we've come full circle in this revolution But if you suffer e-motion sickness how can you ever expect a movement? 4.) Editing, Wordplay and the Art of Patience I distribute multi syllabic rhyme schemes cuz they appear the hardest Yet there's another facet of rap that only appeals to martyrs Steel your heart it's the editing section, welcome to the fields we harvest The first draft reveals the art, the revision reveals the artist You have to be more than the sum of your parts and have a real target But some of you aren't, you rap uncharted to take a stab in the darkness All we see are the holes and improvements that could've been made If you never intended to bring your best then you shouldn't have came You're either good or you're lame, why complain when better drops will do? If you want to improve, add set ups to punchlines whenever possible... Example from 'Meme': My sex drive is nuts... A Porsche, Cadillac or a Stinger I bet you got a Toyota like a Mandalorian action figure A toy Yoda, *snickers*, add you to the sea-of-victims I got such a clean-cut-image you can see-blood-in it The sequence fits, with a double barrel you don't aim to hit Rhyming to the punch in the same line vastly strengthens it I may try to upgrade your shit but I'm not done with the lecture Now let's find subtle connections that only shine under inspection... Example from 'Meme': I'm no Bruce Wayne but all these clowns I've grown to hate Each flow is slain like Lois Lane when there's no S-Cape No escape... Flow is SLAIN/LoiS-LANE; the last and first letters connect To create the word in question, alternate spelling doesn't reflect Use this method until the madness of it becomes automatic And explain your wordplay as part of the verse, never in brackets... Example from 'Rhymehunter': Correct; You going off the rails, skipping all the stairs for the bannister Until you're implored to surrender like Tyrion Lannister Imp-lord-to-surrender; I got to list the facts A song of ice and fire only makes opposites a track... Incorrect: You going off the rails, skipping all the stairs for the bannister Until you're implored (imp-lord) to surrender like Tyrion Lannister Hope you're familiar with the show Game of Thrones on HBO I just had to make it known that brackets break the flow Like static on the radio, the opposites-a-track line was solid And it stemmed from a process I otherwise wouldn't have thought of A lot of terms don't need to be pointed out like planets forming Everyone can tell it's enormous, some things are self explanatory... Example from 'Rhymehunter': My style's radiating, I get what ->Chernobyl intentions be Yet giving all your time and energy won't make you an online celebrity No explanation needed, don't question a horse when in the saddle Mortar every brick of your castle, and be sure to pick your battles There's no such thing as a good rapper, no king or the GOAT There's just people who edit their work and people who don't You're supposed to be receptive, don't bring the pen and pad for notes Using your cell phone is best for jotting ideas as you go Don't oversaturate with your posts, it's best to take some lessons Why make three insignificant rhymes when you can make one epic? Seasoned veterans are raw and spit with no mind to follow it I can't offer hints 'til ya practise mental patience like psychologists Your style is your fingerprint, uniquely your recipe The rule of thumb is don't post until you've already begun your next piece A text emcees learning curve puts you straight in a circle But patience is a virtue only the greatest can turn to Like Malcolm's death by the nation of Islam in HDR Complaints start but play it smart and editing should be your favorite part. 5.) Dealing with Text Success, Audio and Managing the Growing Ego You will start to get text blah's and feel the constant pull of audio But unless you got the flow don't step outside of your comfort zone Unbeknownst to you text hype tears like a band aid Ninety percent of you will need Rosetta Stone for the mic to translate Call it a heightened state of awareness, I sure don't make the rules We all basically assumed that rhyming words together makes us cool I'd hate to prove you wrong in songs, much less record you This is just poetry dude, tons of uncool people have done it before you The laymen 'balks' at your muse, rapping to them is cardboard They're naysayers to a dark horse, they see an attitude not an artform Too soft for the hardcore, to them you're a talking spaceship They just don't get the cocky slang which effects your body language It's oddly alien; Students savior tips from those whose tenure's greater We've all had original lines that a major artist said ten years later Those rodents sure plague us, but all plagiarism is rote... It's now that artists line, not yours; They matter... you don't Fame is a ladder that broke, but an easy climb don't feel right Remember you're an online rapper, you're not relevant in real life Won't get rich in this career, trust, I peered through wallets On average 100 views really means about 50 people saw it And about half of those actually read the whole thing and digested it But if everyone thinks they're the best at this, shit, why mess with it? Vets respond on discussion boards and are reflecting by tomorrow But I guarantee you they will never be woke by resting on their laurels The art of war wore itself out, yet still some seem naked Constant battling is for beginners and the eternally uncreative But if you really must debate it, and an opponent leaves you for dead... Mixing personals with general punches will lead to success Too many people can't blend in, allegedly a legend dies in crowds The second threads start to tie you down... heavy lies the crown. 6.) Maintaining a Legacy It's hard to define the sense and sound of true isolation It's lonely at the top, you're better off in general population By now you slaughtered every topic, even got archived for good measure No one wants to be forgotten; Everyone wants to be remembered Once you reach the pinnacle, staying there should be your lifelong mission Time might diminish it unless you strive to do something different Vets dismiss all up and comers, they fear the day they plummet I've been down that road before, please steer far away from it You can't be afraid to make mistakes, some will drop false comments But don't brag about your accomplishments or it comes off as nonsense Got to let the work speak for itself, even if topics seem stale If you have to explain it after you dropped, you've already failed That entails choosing the lesser of two evils to report to So be sure to give back and support the people who support you Nobody should be put on pedestal, that's where the struggle's at The secret of rap: If you love the art it will love you back Cut yourself some slack, own what you send out to the ether I gave you the tool belt to do it yourself, don't just depend on features And I'll be sitting here, watching you get famous from the bleachers Just remember the student can never be greater than the teacher... ;) http://www.netcees.org/showthread.php?t=142141

This was a long read but it was worth every bit, i wish something like this was around when i first started years and years ago, the whole climb was relatable throughout. The vets clowning and all the basic rhyming words, working yourself up to multies and punches resonated with me because i lived it. It becomes natural after a point, loved how you dissected your own verses as lessons also, was awesome to see that firsthand kind of teaching. I admire your craft and work and though i don't think I've got to the final step this was a great refresher in my eyes and would make a great introduction for newbies. Dope work man

This was thorough and respected its title. Honestly it motivated me to start editing cuz I barely do that as far as posting on here, unless it’s for an audio that I’m gonna post and you have to do that painful slicing of sentences so that it flows better
No but for real, this was cool |
