Any serious runners here?
Ayo... So I been a pretty consistent runner for the past 5 years ago. I've always tried to go back and forth between running and working out but have really been dedicated to running first and foremost.
This year I'm trying to keep some of my running habits but also get into strength training. I'm running a half marathon next weekend and once I'm done, I'd like to know some ways to mix in a good workout routine into my cardio. Only reason I haven't tried to bulk up in years is because when I'm training for long runs, I prefer to stay as lean as possible and eat as healthy/light as I can. I got some cats I know around town who can help me but at the same time I know there are a couple people on here who are really dedicated to strength training. Trying to get as many perspectives as I can. Any input would be appreciated from srs runners or people who work out. Maybe @oats would have some feedback. Thanks guyz

^This.
Unless you're consuming a ridiculous amount of calories, that is. Which I'm going to guess you're not. Probably just a regular diet and stuff.

Seems like all people who want to put weight on just cut out a bunch of cardio, work out with heavy weights and retain mass that way. I was looking for a way to kind of combine the 2. I'd love to be able to stay lean with a low body fat yet at the same time look more bulky. Not necessarily like a "bro" but kind of like Typer Durdin style Feelz me?

Wouldn't say I'm a "serious" runner but I go through periods where I'm into it and I did a half marathon once. If you want to strength train *after* the half (as in you won't be training specifically for another big distance) then you could just do any strength program out there and run a bit on the side. I don't think you can be srs about long distance running and strength training simultaneously, but you can do the one srsly and the other not so srsly.

I actually just read something about this. It really seems like this is an idea that clashes with one another.
More research will be done. Has anyone in here dabbled with cross fit? Hearing this may be a consideration to do both.

old head Des is actually right on this
Do things like clean & press, incline press, squats - low weight and high reps. Focus on intensity but make sure you're not sacrificing good form. And load up on the protein. Drink some whey & make sure you got a lot in every meal. |

im doing a cardio routine and have cut out running for the past
month. You will never see a buff marathon runner, unless it's a guy who previously did weight training and has some decent cardio. if you still are running putting in some workout routines won't buff you out unless you make it your primary and reduce your running drastically. I did 8 miles a day consistently and once i cut it out I gained a ton of mass. Im basically pancake and diode if they FUÄŒKED in butt. nah but. the question is stupid. If you want to gain a bit more mass, try experimenting eith cutting out some cardio and adding a bit more calisthenic exercises that deal with the area of mass |

also it's almost physically impossible to gain mass as a marathon runner, I used to have to tske in an absolutely insane amount of calories just to maintain weight. or else id lose it. swimmers deal with the same thing

Yea...
Low reps with increasing weight is better for bulking. If you're going for strength as someone who runs marathons.. you're gonna want to gain lean muscle mass instead. You'll be building it throughout your body that way too. Not tryna carry around a couple max-curl'd up guns around for 20+ miles |
