9/11/1997 The lighting descended as the atmosphere inside grew electric — Our title contenders arrive to their entrance music with 20,000 live in attendance. The crowd are highly receptive, these Quebeckers are hungry and ready for blood Both wrestlers study each other, flexing their muscles, an inherent distrust is evident judging by the menacing looks exchanged as the Molson Centre erupts! You can sense this is something special before the opening bell has been rung. Everyone’s stood on their feet in awe of the moment. The talking is over. Shawn drops a shoulder, making a desperate lunge toward his opponent He corners Bret throwing a succession of punches before he can focus The audience growing louder, adrenaline pumping as Hart caught him unnoticed and launched an heroic fightback— landing two rights that stagger his rival until The Hitman has Shawn Michaels down first in their match for the title! The fans at Survivor Series are stood in their droves supporting one of their own as a flurry of punishing blows are hurriedly thrown while HBK is stuck on the ropes. A thunderous clothesline arrives with an impact that bites at the skin timed with precision so Michaels is flipped and somersaults to the outside of the ring. The fighting begins to intensify as Bret follows him down onto the ground There’s a c.acophonous sound as a sea of bodies surround them with both men lost in the crowd! The onlookers scowl at the punches exchanged right in front of their faces Shawn’s muscular frame slumps on a railing only put into place because of their safety. There’s a look of pure hatred in the cold eyes of Bret who’s own pride won’t let him go light against Shawn, both find momentum and throw rights and lefts! The strobe lights reflect and glance off the glistening silver and flamingo pink with Hitman landing instinctive right hands to the chin until they’re back in the ring. The referee casually signals for the match to begin the second the bell is raised — These are two of the very best heavyweight legends to ever grace wrestling’s centre stage. Bret doesn’t hesitate in attempting to step on the gas and put an end to things fast as he stretches the fabric of an American flag held in his hands around the neck of his adversary, then pulling back sending the fans into hysterical rapture as he chokes out every last desperate gasp! The entire venue is standing with him, urging him on and on the fervour of ambience getting bigger as Bret delivers an inverted atomic drop! Shawn looks hurt as his body flops motionless to the floor but Bret’s wanting more sending him soaring off the ropes with incredible force — but misses the clothesline he intended it for! There’s a frenzy as Shawn counters, silencing Bret with multiple strikes to the head timed to perfection as Michaels then sends him through the ropes to ringside once again! They fight at the edge of the apron, the crowd watch as they see Bret stop for a deep breath before his bodies released head-first onto the sheet metal block of the steel steps. Shawn shows phenomenal reflex as he takes a Canadian flag and breaks it in half aiming a stabbing motion toward the face of the champion with what remains in his hands! Bret looks in pain as he staggers back to the ring with neither man giving in the momentum gradually swings, but it’s the fans that are winners in this championship. Hitman acts instinctively, climbing the ropes to dive at his foe only Shawn Michaels exposes the ref to the impact to capitalise on the moment— surviving the blow! There’s a sense this might just be over. The ref crawls gingerly to them still pretty confused HBK senses victory looms and quickly manoeuvres Bret into his own finishing move! The bell rings and the screwjob is complete, though there’s not yet definitive proof It would be too early back then to predict we would lose The Hitman we knew. Within just a few years there would be another moment that cut him open as he struggled processing the ugly notion of what happened to his brother Owen. Their love and closeness remained to the end, his most faithful of friends, some say that his death would later affect their fathers health — another taken from Bret. The pain of regret aged him no less. His hair colour sadly fading from its tousled black to grey The struggles that he faced became a doubles match the day his dear mother passed away. Bret struggled having Davey Boy Smith gone. The news hurt like a shot in the arm. This one hit him hard. He may have been his brother in law, but not in his heart. The problems then started at home, Bret became resigned and withdrawn, His wife was supportive and remained at his side throughout all this — but later filed for divorce. With retirement forced upon him after a stroke, he went from travelling the globe to having to cope with the knowledge he may never get back on the road. The sabotage over the screwjob would be debated for years but that same interference ultimately caused the wheels to fall off and derailed his career. Who was to blame for it really? While Shawn Michaels held his tongue on how title belt was won The weight of his spineless self indulgence will be carried by him until his final bell is rung.

Lars -
this was cool, as usual. I don't know shit about wrestling so I had to look a tonne of stuff up and read history but after that slog, it helped the piece be more cohesive. this does a great job of feeling like a live event, giving an exciting atmosphere to the piece, and touches on many wrestling tidbits, moves, history, etc. Quote:

this was cool. Thats one of the few things I remember about wrestling. this was deeply atmospheric. this was Charleston White level of detail.I think the flow could have been a bit smoother for my taste.
