Crime and Punishment is so good. The best portrayal of the fear of being caught that I've ever read.

lmao their shit is smooth but it's dense with existential ideas that people project onto the book and pull out of their assholes...imo

Jung is kewl I was listening to robert moore audios and he talks about how jung's greatest contribution in his opinion was the discovery and acceptance of the shadow self as an energy in the psyche which can be transformed/channeled into productive energies in various ways (ie. generative contribution to society, Acceptance of aggression morphed into your ability to will)

The fifth agreement is a practical spiritual contract with the self which is pretty much common sense but never practiced. It's doubting the maya or illusion of symbols swirling around in other people's heads, as well as doubting the symbols in your own head. By doing this you stay connected to the one truth which is that we all emanate from one source of reality which is, he says, grounded in pure consciousness which is pure perfection/love/potential. Doing this in conjunction with the other four agreements (impeccability of the word, not making assumptions, not taking things personally, always try your best) leads you into a mental state of heaven on earth, which is a discipline and a perpetual choice in the present moment (time doesn't exist). By going against these 5 agreements, you are acting from fear instead of love, and confusion in your attempt to reconcile contradictory themes which inevitably occur when your view of life is contingent upon an interpretation of symbols and words that were hoisted upon you as a young human being. It is only through breaking these false agreements and stepping into an ever present communion with the 5 agreements, according to toltec wizdom, that you can set yourself free. One aspect of this is that all of your energy goes into maintaining these myriad contradictory agreements and it takes all your mental energy to hold these false agreements together. Once you start breaking the agreements, power that was given to the false agreements returns to you so that you can become a more powerful creator and contributor to the world. It's basically saying always doubt your opinions and the opinions of others, and you will automatically sense the truth of every situation via intuition, by not thinking about it. Of course intellect still has its purpose; we wouldn't be able to communicate with each other had we not concocted symbols and languages to communicate but all the symbols and their meaning to us is pretty much false opinion created by accepting other's views a long time ago. Therefore We create our own illusions, but we can create an illusion of heaven or an illusion of hell...imho.

There wasn't really a lot written about smartphones themselves, which I found disappointing. I would have enjoyed an analysis on the history of them, along with how they've become socially acceptable to the degree that people don't find it weird to get their phone out at dinner and other similar situations. I don't find the reason why they're addictive overly interesting, it's obvious, but how they became so addictive that they're now able to function above social norms is very interesting.

It was also surprising that he didn't focus more on porn. It's only recently that we have high speed internet and tube sites, which is completely different to porno mags and even early internet porn, when it took forever to download even an image. The potential ramifications for future generations could be, and likely will be, massive. He even discussed how the adolescent brain is so easily molded, but didn't seem to discuss the worry of youngsters being able to stream the most extreme porn going before they've even held hands with a girl.

Overall, it was ok, but it was too shallow and I finished it feeling like I didn't learn anything new.

agree mostly....although I rated it a little higher because the writing was good enough to keep me interested through out the entire book but also began feeling disappointed when he delved into video game addiction thinking to myself like this not what I signed up for....idk I suppose addiction is addiction though which was kindve the point of the book in my opinion which also in turn was a contributing factor as to why this was shallow as you put it....since its really only so much that can be explained before youre repeating topics. I think i would've been more interested in more information as to what makes the technology so addictive specifically and less about the actual condition and symptoms of the addiction. all in all the anecdotes were interesting enough in my opinion to keep the book moving but agree it wasn't as informative towards the subject matter as i assumed it would be prior to reading.

Yeah, I agree. Like you say, I think most people understand addiction to a certain degree, so it being about the technology rather than the addiction felt like the premise of the book, but for a lot of it, it wasn't like that. Definitely agree with the bolded part, it was a very easy read and I initially gave it a 3/5, then realised that it wasn't overly memorable and downgraded it a little.

What's the December book of the month? I've got a Kindle so it's easy for me to read whatever.

Just looking through some of the books I've rated and I've found one that might be good.

It's called Sum: Forty Tales from the Afterlives. It's around 120 pages and it's a very easy read, so could be a good one to get things going. It's essentially 40 very short stories of different types of afterlives. I've always found the concept of afterlife fascinating, so I really liked it. Some reviews on Goodreads found it repetitive, so it could be an interesting one to discuss. I also read it around 5/6 years ago, so I'm curious if my opinion of it would have changed over the years.

I found it in Mobi format:
