Lessons learned after first class breathren:

1. Must relax.
2. Must improve cardio holy crap. After 30 mins Of rolling I am totally gassed.
3. Must be patient


Pros:

1. Coach said I did a few things pretty good for a first timer
2. My strength is a plus I rolled with a guy larger than me and was still able to pin him
3. I realized when I made a mistake


Overall this was awesome. I love it. Need to increase my cardio because I felt like it made me want to give up a few times.

Breathing and patience :)

The best way to increase your grappling cardio is to grapple. It's its own thing. Completely different from striking. Further, stand-up grappling cardio is completely different from knee-wrasslin cardio too. Enjoy the mats.

your first year? defense. drill basic arm bars, triangles, omoplatas, kimuras, etc. but keep your focus on knowing where your limbs are, what position you are in, and how to escape.

That is something that isn't for me. I would have to agree with the GI portion, tho. I've heard rolling around on the mat by some friends who compete in that stuff - their gyms are FAIRLY clean due to hygiene but be careful of staff infections man... Considering no GI and a lot of people poring sweat, blood and spit all over the mats.

If the mats aren't cleaned daily with bleach or a bleach alternative (like Simple Green IV), then don't go to that gym. Simple.

Wearing a gi or not has little to do with the hygiene other than dirty motherfuckers who don't wash their gis or belts, in which case the odds of bacterial or viral infections are actually higher in the gi (+constant abrasions from gripping/choking/etc).

Train in the gi because it's a more difficult challenge than no-gi (if you're doing this for the fun of the art).

I would like to think the GI provides a little more protection.

As far as cleanliness, that's like expecting people at the GYM to wipe machines down before and after use. I do it because I'm a germ'phobe. Majority do not and apparently don't care about personal hygiene.
