They have a free paper here in KC called The Pitch. It has a section giving the weekly schedule of all musical accts and they always have an "Open Mic" section. Most places can play CDs but I recommend just having all your instrumentals on your phone as that's more popular these days. Just start showing up. They usually have a sign up so you can check out the other artists before you. Most of the time they're spoken word guys or a guitarist showing his artistic side for the ladies. Anytime I've done this everyone always is surprised at a rapper and you'll stand out. I've made a lot of connections this way, I just don't do it anymore. I need to get back into it.
