Has Hip Hop contributed to your homophobic language/view / in general?
Just interested in your thoughts / views.
One of the most apparent things since return to this forum the past week and this overabundant use of the word 'faggot' and describing something as 'gay' as being a bad thing. I've noticed in real life the two most common people I meet who still speak like this are ignorant idiots who have barely socialised outside their immediate circles and have a strong conservative / limited understanding experience of the world. The other is people in hip hop. I use to be the same as a teenager and I'm sure listening to the billions disses sub consciously had an influence. I work in the arts and so many of my colleagues are gay and it just reminds me how ignorant/negative I once was. I never use the word faggot now or describe something as gay when I think its stupid. Discuss / insecure people accuse me of being gay. |

@DVS
Good thread I feel like your generalization of all hip hop fans fans is wrong. Maybe all of the people who you consider hip hop fans are like that but I’d like it to believe the majority isn’t like. Here’s my perspective, I use the word fagot a lot round here, niggah aswell. Matter of fact I just posted a thread using the word fagot. But at this point I’m my usage of that word, I no longer associate that word with actual homosexuals. When I use word like nigga and fagot I’m not referencing gay and black people. I’m using it in a general term. Usually when I use the word fagot. It often times describes a person doing some thing that isn’t favorable to the majority. You know like no showing to a battle or bitching about votes. None of that has anything to do with sexual orientation does it? Seems like those who get offended are injecting their own bias. If your offended because I call you fagot because your LLB’ing all and down this motherfucker producing negative replies that don’t produce actual LOLs. That’s on you. How does that translate into me oppresing who you like to fuck? Further more there’s another way fagot and nigga gets used. And that’s obviously to provoke and get a reaction. If your not keen to that specific fact, your outrage or disagreement is justification for the troll. You’ve been trolled fagot niggah. I like how you assume most of use are ignorant and don’t know gay people in real life. Reply |

Thanks for reply - will reply properly when I get home from work. Probably re-edit my post because you've made it obvious I didn't think clarify / word it properly
sorry I should have been more clear - Most people I'm friends with - are in hip hop and aren't like this or homophobic. But most people I meet when I was younger who were homophobic, were in hip hop. That was just my experience, I'm not suggesting everyone in hip hop or the majority are homophobic. Hope that clarifies will come back later and post properly. In regards to boards it just became apparent the amount of use of the word 'faggot' and 'gay' which is absent from my day to day life. |

i mean. I'm guilty of using it to describe negative outcomes. some, not all of my buddies use it in a jokingly insulting context but never literally about a homosexual person. south park's "F Word" pretty much sums up the vocabulary of "faggot" for me.
idk. i would likely never use the term w/ the few homosexual people i interact with on a social/professional level, unless we had a conversation beforehand about it. obviously out of respect for the power it can carry. overall though i'd bet most people who are using the term among friends don't harbor any actual hatred towards gay people. but it's certainly got an ugly history. musically, sure. we (as in my immediate circle) all listen to hip-hop pretty exclusively so there could be a correlation there. but it's not to blame for homophobia at large i don't think.

@dead man brings up good point. I would never use the term fagot loosely around someone I knew was actual gay unless I knew that person was on with it. Honestly I think that’s what it comes down to. Your personal experience. I’m Latino and homosexuality is generally Frowned upon i my community. And we all at victims to our surroundings but I’d like to believe that everyone on the internet troll or not works Around this general agreement that every thing said and posted has some type satirical aspect to it, and we should all take that into account. I’ve used nigger on this website many times. And many other have aswell. But that give me an actual right or any one else to judge people knowing that most of what is produced by the internet is click bate or rectianary ploys? |

im positive im classified as homophobic.
that said i mean i lived with lesbians for awhile, its not like im in some closeted world view where i've never interacted with gay people. i just think its weird as shit, but its mainly the guy/guy thing i don't get because its so alien to me. the idea behind it, not actual gays. but yea im not out to deprive them of any rights, and im not an asshole to gay people i come across, i'd never call one a faggot and i'd temper my use of faggot/queer/gay and shit around them, because i don't want to hurt anyones feelings lmao but i'll call my pops a faggot if he doesn't want to get trashed and go to the game or something, on some "quit being a faggot" shit. but im not telling my father "quit being a man who prefers the company of dicks in his butt" i don't know if i can blame hip hop for my homophobia as much as just the culture of being a man. but who knows i mean i came up with a biker type white trash father, was involved in the sports world as a youth, then transitioned into dirtball druggie fighting partying life and transitioned into the blue collar workforce, with hip hop being the soundtrack to all of it, interspersed with classic rock. so maybe its a class thing, i dunno the lower classes and pursuits that are dominated by men and displaying uniquely masculine traits.

It's a mix of hiphop and the way we talk/use words differently and Louis CK's bit on this:
That said, I really don't care. If something is gay as fuck it's gay as fuck. A close friend of mine is gay and he'll occasionally say things like ''he's a fucking fag'' or ''that's the gayest thing I've heard, believe me, I should know'' in an insulting kind of way as well despite him being gay. I've always been reserved when I'm with people I don't know that well, it's all about who I'm with and context. It took some time until I was comfortable with gay jokes around him. People that know me know I don't got anything against LGBT and would fight for their right to be themselves etc. and can use those words freely, but only with certain people and groups that got the same views as me. I'll never use it as an insult to someone who's gay either. I'll use those words naturally on this forum and other places where it's viewed for what it is and not taken out of context to mean something else or hurt people that are sensitive to different ways of using words like faggot, gay, homosexual and so on.

The only thing you need to know about gays is this:
You ask most dudes (heteros) about 2 chicks they're like "YEAAAAHHH" but 2 dudes? It's "NOOO" then ask girls. They'll say the same thing. "Oh yeah, I've messed around with other chicks before." You ever watch gay porn? "EEWWWW" Idk why, I've fucked girls in the ass before. It's pretty sweet actually. They make different noises, their pussy gets even juicier afterwards. There's a lot of cool shit about ass fucking a chick. But you ask me if I'd ever get ass fucked or fingered it's "hell no!" A man's ass should be left alone to shit. That's it. I don't like ass play on me and I don't like thinking about other dudes assholes either. Anal is cool with chicks tho, it's weird. |

It has nothing to do with homophobia in the same way a white person might say ''nigga'' isn't racist in itself (inappropriate and cringey perhaps, but not racist) unless you're saying it for no reason other than to spark a negative reaction from another human being for who they are as an individual and not just used as a curse word to spice up the lyrics or your language a bit. It doesn't translate to real homophobia, and nigga doesn't translate to real racism. Miscommunication is society's challenge, getting distraught at words without taking context into account only makes the people that takes it personal idiots for not seeing the intentions behind them. People got to stop being offended at everything.

I'm 31. Never even had a thermometer up my ass since I was a baby. No reason to start now. Also, I feel sorry for anyone/thing going around there. I'm fairly certain that's not a pleasant spot for anyone to visit.

The roots of this are in organized religion, not hip-hop
I think most hip-hop artists are either Christian or Muslim, both of who openly talk about homosexuality as a sin or a perversion. |
