Name 10 albums BETTER than The Chronic 2001.
I went around the job and was asking for 5 originally, and that was easier than I thought. But 10? BETTER?! I mean, obviously Dre didn't write any of the lyrics or even do the heavy lifting on the production either. Shit... Still D.R.E. was Scott Storch on the piano and that was essentially the whole beat. I'll give him props for being the executive producer and making it all come together. But it's obvious that Dre is nothing without Mel-Man.
EVEN STILL, that album had so many bangers. Production was top quality and aside from Hitman every rapper featured on it came with it. It's a masterpiece front to back IMO and even though it sold well, seems to have faded. The 1999 release signified a steep downfall for the industry over the majority of the last 2 decades. While there were bright spots since then, the majority of popular rap seems to have diminished tremendously in quality. Regardless of my feelings for Dre and understanding he's more of a string puller than a musician, the fact remains that the West Coast has struggled to keep it's foothold on the game since Dre essentially retired. Yes, West coast artists have been successful since then, but it's like the East-West roster for the all Star game, the South is actually dominating the industry these days to where both coats are imitating southern rappers more often than not now. I feel as though Dre was almost single handedly responsible for the downfall of our industry since the talking heads are no longer clamoring for that gritty West coast style that made the East try and compete. The both coast beef of the late 90s still held sway when this album dropped in the sense that it was only a few years removed from the deaths of big and pac. The world was craving the next big West coast release, and Dre hit the note perfectly. Add the hype of the recently famous Em and the strong play Forgot about Dre and Still DRE received the industry was in a good place. Dre is from an era where Big and Pac set new standards and while he wasn't on that level as an artist, he was on that level as an entertainer, even bigger perhaps. I think the last 20 years would have been different had Detox actually dropped and maybe even another project after. If Dre dropped something right now equal in quality, I don't believe he'd have the numbers he did before and I think that's disgusting. There's my book report of the month. |
