Exclamation Baron Mynd's Nasty Finds - "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover"

The Cook, the Thief, his Wife & Her Lover

So the basic premise of this one is that the wife of an absolutely obnoxious restaurant owner starts having an affair with a quiet bookworm in between meals at her husbands restaurant. Doesn't sound too bad, does it?! And really, it isn't....

I'll add here that I probably saw more of Helen Mirren in this film than I ever thought I would see! The film is great, well shot and acted by all involved, and has definite replay value. It's evidently an intellectual film with a lot of layers to it that you perhaps won't find on first watch, I didn't at least, but regardless this is still a thoroughly good movie.

There wasn't a lot that 'shocked' or that I found very disturbing, despite it's end (which I won't reveal for the benefit of anyone wanting to see it) and for that reason alone I don't have it rated so highly on my personal list of disturbing cinema, but if I had to recommend a film to you guys that I thought was accessible to the majority - this would be it.

It's extremely well put together with some great actors involved, names I didn't expect to see in many movies on my most disturbing lists if I'm honest - but they do a brilliant job.

This is actually a great film, without saying too much, watch for the characters costumes changing colour... This one may not rank amongst the most disturbing out there IMO, but it's a hidden gem well worth digging up!

There really isn't a whole lot to this one I didn't cover, in truth...

I saw way more of Helen Mirren's hairy vag and tits than I imagined I ever would. At least it was one of her younger roles, I guess?

The bookworm she has the affair with is eventually caught by the husband, and the bookworms mouth is stuffed with the pages of the book until he suffocates and dies.

Eventually, the wife convinces the chef to cook the bookworm/lovers body... and her husband is made to sit infront of everyone he had annoyed throughout the movie, held at gunpoint, and made to eat the cooked body of the bookworm/lover... starting with the penis.

That's it, the end of the film!

It's more disgusting in concept than execution I guess. It's not really gory or necessarily disturbing to me. You don't 'see' much compared to other movies on my list is maybe my point. The idea is odd, and maybe the film shows it's age slightly, but this is neither completely disgusting nor unwatchable - infact, this one in particular has a lot of replay value IMO and I'll def be revisiting it at some point due to the subtle layers throughout the film I've since found out about afterward (almost like you would with Fight Club or a film in that ilk)

Worth the watch!

So I figured fuck it, may as well contain my sole interest to one thread rather than posting multiple ones up with no replies, right?

I'm gonna drop them all in here and update this single thread with my reviews etc/answer questions/update and compile an ongoing list of where I rate the movies as I go along.

Megan Is Missing

This one is a cautionary tale about internet usage and how you never really know who you could be talking to... We follow two teenage girls, Megan the more outgoing, popular and sexually active - her friend, Amy, the quieter, virgin, unpopular type. Megan gets talking to a guy via a chatroom. He says his webcam is broke etc but in her naivety she doesn't see anything untoward. There are a few instances he has opportunity to meet with her and doesn't show up, explaining himself away, despite at one point being at a party she was also at and being able to describe everything she was wearing. She puts it down to him being extremely shy. If that doesn't cause alarm bells to start ringing I guess nothing will. But again, she's just a kid, I guess it may not have clicked.

They eventually agree to meet at the rear of a premises, where we're shown she's grabbed by the hand by a male and led away. The next day no one knows where she is. Amy (her best friend) grows weary as they usually speak everyday and eventually a news report explains Megan is missing.

Amy is still in contact with the mysterious screen name her friend had been talking to prior to this. One day Amy is recording a tribute message for her friend via a video camera she's been bought, when she too is snatched and vanishes. We're then treated to footage from the found video camera of the last 22 minutes recorded on its film. In this were shown a 14 year old Amy chained up in a cell and made to eat food from a bowl like a dog. She's then led to another part of the kidnappers underground lair where she's brutally sexually assaulted, but the drama doesn't end there...

After this Amy begs her assailant to let her go home. He agrees, telling her to climb into a large barrel so as she won't see where the attack took place. As she nears the barrel she can see that inside is her former friend Megan's corpse.

As Amy cries out, she is dragged and placed inside the barrel with Megan's dead body. A prolonged scene follows as the killer then digs a hole big enough for the barrel to fit in, while Amy pleads from inside it, still alive. The barrel is buried after what feels like forever and the killer leaves the scene. Horrific!

The entire film is shot with the intention of appearing like a mockumentory, all from found footage of mobile phones, images left on the girls PC's, and film from Amy's camcorder. Right from the start of the film were shown webcam and recorded footage from the video. I'm not so sure that I believe the claim this is based on a real event, or that the last twenty-odd minutes we see are unedited as the film claims. It's certainly an horrific ordeal, but there's little evidence - if any - I've seen of this taking place (and I've looked, believe me). It seems more likely the film was built around a lot of different news stories and pieced together to make a whole. All in all it was a good film, I wasn't so impressed by the acting early on but as the film progressed it improved. The rape scene probably affected me more than Irreversibles, if I'm honest, and there are a few photographs seen of Megan being tortured prior to that that look awful, but I won't spoil anything for those who want to check it out. This wasn't as disturbing to me as others out there, but I can imagine to parents with a daughter this definitely could be terrifying. Well worth checking out, ignore the reviews!

Deliverance

I'd been recommended this by my father in law and sat on it for a few months before watching, not for any particular reason other than I didn't expect a whole lot. I hold my hands up and admit I was wrong!

I guess this is an older film compared to some of the others on my Most Disturbing list, but it really doesn't show it's age at all. The 'squeal like a pig' scene is the one I don't think I'll ever erase from memory - I think because of me not knowing what to expect - and so for that reason I'm not going to say much more on the matter.

The next image I haven't been able to shift and that's the toothless grin of the one redneck, having read a little about the film afterwards he was apparently a suggestion by Burt Reynolds to the director having worked with him in a stage play previously... he was brilliantly cast here IMO.

The movie itself is about a group of four friends who go on a camping/canoeing trip down the Mississippi River. Events transpire that lead them to killing a man, disposing of the body, then trying to cover their tracks... only a friend of the dead mans knows where they are and is intent on killing them for revenge.

The suspense to this film is done brilliantly, there are more twists and turns than the Mississippi has herself and it's thoroughly enjoyable. The film itself doesn't place so highly on my list purely because it's not what I would find 'disturbing' - bit either way this is an amazing film, and I recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it before. Well worth the watch!

Martyrs

I'd like to start off by saying that I'm a huge fan of the French horrors they've released of recent years (Haute Tension, Inside, Switchblade Romance etc) and so I've held on to Martyrs for a while before playing it almost in anticipation of the goodies it holds from what I'd heard...

The film is highly recommended by many fans of disturbing cinema, and ranked fairly highly on the majority of lists I've come across, but for me it just seemed to fall a little short of expectations.

Sure, the first half of the film is great as we get to see a little backstory of a girl who escapes being tortured etc and is eventually sent to an orphanage of some kind. Here she befriends another young girl. Fast forward fifteen years and they've located the house she was tortured in. They kill the family inside. It's clear the young girl who was tortured still has mental issues and she eventually kills herself, giving in to the image she has in her head of another girl she could have saved back when she was being tortured- but didn't.

The killing scenes are well done and graphic without being over the top. This isn't torture porn for the sake of it like some of the films contemporaries like Saw or Hostel etc - and that's a credit to the film.

However, as we near its final third the film almost seems like a separate film altogether from the one we saw at the beginning.

The second girl is captured, taken down to the basement where he friend had been tortured over a decade before, brutally beaten in unflinching scenes that are repeated again and again. The ladders descending to this basement by her attackers hit with a clunk to the floor when they drop which is especially well done.

Anyway, long story short, the basic premise is this group are torturing people to the point their bodies give up and the victims reach a state of ecstasy - somewhere between life and the afterlife. The girl is later flayed until her skin is gone from her body apart from around her face. It's exceptionally well done and again, deserves commending.

The girl, in this euphoric state, murmurs some words to a lady known only as Mademoiselle (who seems to be the chief ring leader of this cult) which eventually leads to the Mademoiselle shooting herself dead rather than revealing to the rest of the cult what it was the young victim had said.

It's here the film ends, somewhat unapologetically, and is open for the viewer to interpret as to what the young flayed girl said. I've read a few plausible suggestions online, but I don't buy them.

I won't spoil it for anyone that thought of checking this out. It's a good movie, just not one id readily place so highly on my Most Disturbing List is all. If you're interested in the recent resurgence of French Horrors of the past few years, a fan of disturbing cinema, or just looking to see how far you can pushed - it's well worth a watch, even the casual viewer may find it worth their time as this is a good film with some great cinematography and not overdone with regards to the gore etc.

I don't know if it's for everybody, but it's certainly not a bad film by any stretch. Well worth a watch, just not that highly ranked in my opinion when judged against some of the other 'sickening/disturbing' films in my collection is all.

August Undergrounds Mordum

Mordum is part of the August
Underground Trilogy and probably it's most famous/infamous. The basic premise is it being a pseudo-snuff film, filmed on a handheld camera. It opens with a scene of a woman having sex with a guy, and someone watching through a window or keyhole - we then find out the guy she's sleeping with is her brother. The woman opens to the door to the peeping tom after he keeps knocking, they have an argument, and in this argument the sexual tension rises with her then cutting herself with a piece of glass across the stomach. Sex and self multination within the first 5 minutes. Welcome to August Underground! There isn't too much of a plot aside from these sado-masochists going around killing people, intercut with scenes of them doing pretty much everyday things in between. But that almost adds to it's disgusting qualities with the thought that these people are living and walking around us - ticking time bombs - seemingly normal on the face of things. Sure, some of the footage is grainy, but again that adds to the realistic quality of this being pseudo snuff. I guess.

The effects are actually top quality, very realistic looking, there's a lot to disturb. Someone's bludgeoned to death with a hammer to the skull, a woman trapped in a box with a mask duct taped to her face - tied up - and showing signs on her arms where she's been cut. She's then forced to touch the female killers pussy and raped by the male one. He strangles her and spits on her chest... Then opens 'coffin' two, where her husband is trapped inside, and they say he either cuts off his own penis or they're going to fuck his wife with a knife. Reluctantly he starts snipping with the nail scissors... Brutal. 20 mins into the film!

The female killer then tastes the removed appendage before offering the victims wife 'one last fuck' with it. I won't go into too much more detail, but you get an idea.

In all honesty, this is definitely one of the most extreme films I've witnessed. I can see why people rate it so highly. I can see why a lot of people throw it into its own little 'torture-porn' subgenre at the same time, though, I'm not entirely convinced it deserves to be left at that and that alone. If you're a fan of films like Man Bites Dog or even just interested in picking this up to test your own stomachs - I'd recommend this as you won't be disappointed, it's not one for the fickle stomached though - you've been warned haha!

I like reading these at work quite a bit. I remember back when I was a younger man I'd read these type of threads on another site. Its almost worse than seeing the movie itself, depicting it in your mind. Never was one for gory flicks but a macabre sense of curiosity makes these threads great. I'd go so far as to suggest that you don't withhold anything due to spoilers; I'd imagine most people who read these are in it for the gory details and don't plan on watching. My 2 cents.

@Dancake I agree with you for these written reviews. My intention is to make a youtube series reviewing these films and so I mainly write down each review after watching them, just so I have my initial thoughts down ready... I don't intend spoiling the movies for the people actually interested, but I understand they're more interesting to you guys if you know what awaits, so I'll keep the gory detail in there for my NCG's!

Thanks for the peepage!

Funny Games

I'll admit, i had never heard the term 'home invasion' prior to this film. But that's precisely what this film is about... Sort of. A family arrive for a vacation at this villa out of town. Two of the locals arrive who seem a little strange and overly keen to help. Through a short series of events early on, the families dog gets killed and the father is hit to the kneecap with a golf club that breaks his leg. The family are forced to sit on a sofa inside the villa by the two young locals, and that's where the film really starts.

As more is revealed about the two strange locals holding the family hostage, we find out that both are junkies that go around the villas looking for things to steal to buy drugs - and that one was molested as a child. Nothing too strong then, eh?

Well, amongst all this, the victims are bound and gagged, the families young son has a plastic bag placed over his head and visibly struggles to breathe in a game of 'cat in the bag' where the wife is made to strip in order to save the son. She complies. The two twenty-something's torturing them tell the family they'll all be dead within twelve hours, and there's a glimmer of hope when the young son escapes to a neighbouring villa, pursued by one of the killers, but we quickly discover this family are all dead, too. The little boy finds a shotgun and points it at the killer who's followed him... but the gun has no bullets in. The boy is quickly disarmed and led back to the holiday villa with his family. Once back at the villa, there's a scene where the mother grabs for the (now loaded by one of the killers) shotgun and shoots one of them dead. The killer hits a rewind button and as the movie starts the scene again, the killer doesn't die. Instead they shoot the child and his blood is left splattered all across the villas TV. Talk about a plasma television, right?! You soon realise this isn't your typical Hollywood horror film where a happy ending awaits. The two remaining parents then attempt an escape, only to later be tracked down, rebound up, and ultimately led to a boat which then sails out to sea and the bodies are dumped never to be found again. As the film closes, we see the killers knock the door of a new villa with a family inside, and implies the same process is repeated...

All in all this is a very well done movie. There are a few instances where the main killer talks directly I camera, which is well executed and almost gives you the feeling like you're an accomplice to the murder/torture in my opinion. The other thing i felt to point out is that there are two versions to this movie, one Austrian, and one a shot-for-shot exact remake called Funny Games US. The remake is copied scene for scene, however, if anyone feels like looking this up - I personally felt the original to be a little more haunting and overall more 'disturbing' which was the point in my original list. So although I didn't cover this and it's remake separately, my reasoning behind that is they're almost identical films albeit with different actors in the roles.

This is a great movie by one of my personal favourite directors, Ted Haneke, I'd recommend the Funny Games US version to people who aren't even horror fans. It's more a psychological thriller actually now I think of it. This one doesn't rate so highly on my disturbing list as others, maybe in concept it could, but it never really affected me in the same way as say... A Serbian Films ending or the turtle soup scene from Cannibal Holocaust. It certainly isn't for everybody, but I genuinely didn't find this one that bad. I was more disgusted at Human Centipede 2 in all honesty.

Nah, I seriously write all these up then post them. Eventually the idea is for me to create my own Youtube videos/series reviewing them for others who might be interested. These are more just pointers recording my original reactions right after watching the film(s).

I feel here I should add that Funny Games is also a sort of attack by Haneke on a Hollywood culture where a happy ending is expected and violence is made consumable etc - I didn't want anyone reading that may have seen it to think I completely overlooked that fact, I got it, it just wasn't really relevant for the review here I guess!

Cutting Moments

This one here's a short film actually but is still thrown up in a LOT of most sickening/disturbing lists - and rightly so! It uses it's short running time to great effect, cutting out a lot of 'character development', but this isn't really the type of movie where that's needed. It opens with what's clearly a dysfunctional family, there's child abuse and clearly a huge rift between the mother and the father - due to the father having zero interest in his wife now. She is desperate to make him want her again, and in one particularly graphic and longing scene she scrubs her face with a Brillo pad until she removes the bottom half of her face, leaving the bathroom sink drenched in her blood. Following this she re-enters the family living room where her husband is watching TV, in an attempt to seduce him with her bloodied red raw jaw covered in blood. She succeeds and eventually as the two of them fuck in the missionary position, the husband reaches for a pair of handy garden shears... then proceeds to chop of his own penis with an almighty chop that had me feeling to check Lars Jnr was still intact. The end.

It may not sound too brutal, (how bad could a short film possibly be, right?) but this film certainly does a lot with what it has. The special effects are brilliantly done and nothing looks cheap, the 'look' of the short is very realistic - especially the two scenes in particular I mentioned - and even though there's little to no real character development, that doesn't really detract from this short film at all, you still feel for those involved and it's graphic content is very well executed. This one doesn't rate so highly on my own personal list purely because it's only a short film and not an actual feature length movie, which is what I was looking at when I started this whole shindig, but for what it's worth this shouldn't be ignored by those interested in this sort of thing, the effects are very well done and impressive looking enough to make you wince. I should maybe do a separate list of short films etc with their own rankings as it doesn't seem fair almost to have this compared to features 3/4 times it's length but I really enjoyed this one, even if it's not for the faint of heart!

A Serbian Film

This is arguably the most notorious film out there. It's on just about every 'Most Sickening/Disturbing Movie' list you'll find posted, and for good reason. More often than not it's in the top three. Why you ask? Well before we get into that let's see what the films about...

The movie follows Milos, a retired porn star, who gets a mysterious offer to star in one last porno movie for mega bucks... but there's a clause. (Isn't there always?!) The new director doesn't tell Milos exactly what his role will be, or what it will entail.

There are a few scenes early on which may not be to everyone's taste, but probably the most infamous of the films is the "Newborn Porn" scene where Milos' director makes him watch one of his prized possessions... We see a mother give birth to a child while a medic delivers it, then as the mother grins on menacingly, the child is raped by the medic - fresh out of the womb. Disgusting. But that's far from the end of this film...

What follows is almost told via flashbacks in Milos' mind. His memory has been blank, but he gradually starts to piece bits back together of a frantic drug-fuelled night of filming... It starts with him hitting a woman doggy style on a filthy bed, before being handed a machete and lopping her head clean off at the point of climax.

We see a female friend of Milos' chained up, made to suck off a guy, who then closes her nostrils shut to stop her breathing - choking her to death with his cock.

Milos and his brother and brought into a room with a bed, its sheets covering two unknown bodies. Milos and his brother Marko fuck the pairs backsides... You almost hope you're wrong about who is beneath the sheets, but it is as horrific as you thought... it's Milos' own wife and their young son!

Milos gets his revenge on the people who wronged him, fucking one guys eye socket with his erect penis until he kills him. Death by getting your skullfucked moments after the guys unknowingly fucked his own sons asshole, yo! All bullshit aside, it's actually a really well done movie. It doesn't look cheap as often is the problem with some of these 'Most Disturbing' films on the list. It's well acted. It's certainly enough to stay with you for a few days after watching.

This one still rates really highly on my list, up there with Cannibal Holocaust, probably my #1 most disturbing film at this point. It definitely had one of the stronger impacts on me directly after finishing the film, stronger than say... Irreversible, which I'm also a huge fan of.

Everything is brilliantly shot, there's not much in the way of dialogue but that works in it's favour really as the bits it does have are almost comical. It has the benefit of being one of the first 'disturbing' films I watched (second after The Human Centipede) and maybe that little nostalgia has me rating it higher than I maybe would? It's really the film that started me off to find something more disturbing, I guess.

Apparently the director claims it's all a metaphor for Serbia being fucked over by the government. I can't say I buy into that at all, personally, but regardless this is well worth checking out if you're a fan of the genre - or even just into disturbing cinema - You won't forget this movie in a hurry, not probably want to watch it a second time - enjoy or endure!

Maniac (2012)

I thought the first-person camera was a brilliant idea, experiencing everything through the eyes of a serial killer. It reminded me a little of Man Bites Dog in that respect, but that's as far as the comparisons go.

This is definitely a strange one, not so sure if I'd have described it as 'disturbing' but it's an enjoyable film. I loved the homage to the film Dr. Caligari and I'm sure my fellow horror buffs will have too.

Elijah Wood puts in a great performance, even his voice has a sense of a little boy lost - despite it having menace to it at the same time. I actually found it quite enjoyable which you can't really say about some of the films on these 'most disturbing' lists.

I was actually pleasantly surprised with this having gone into the film not knowing what to expect - it definitely claimed a few scalps from those ahead in own list and I'd put it above some of the more 'known' movies frequently suggested in this field.

This ones surprisingly well executed, not just torture-porn for the sake of it, and fairly original IMO. It's worth a watch if you're a fan of the genre, or if you're just looking for something a little... different haha!

Link me to his post?

It could be a few diff things, tbh. Sounds like SS Camp 5: Women's Hell or some other Nazisploitation flick. There's a lot of those movies based around the sex camps at Auschwitz.
