Default AOWL SEASON 3 MAGAZINE — EDITION 14

Season 3, Edition 14

Add A Motherfucker
INTRODUCTION by Certain

Welcome, friends. We're closing in on the end of the regular season here in the Art of Writing League. This week's magazine features a special section from Zenland, a no-show shine by Vividlyvague and power rankings by Adonis, along with my normal stuff. But perhaps most importantly, it features a playoff lookahead that will explain the postseason structure and help give you an idea of your chances.

OVERREACTIONS by Zenland
The People's Champ ranks the five biggest blowups in Art of Writing League history

Guys, I'm writing this because I think we're all in denial. You know what I'm talking about, you just won't say it. The AOWL is weird. Seriously. It's a sub-section of a text battle forum devoted to creative writing. Say that out loud and try not to slap yourself in the face.

What's the most enjoyable part for me in my time in the AOWL are the people who take things way too fucking seriously. So, in my boredom I decided to compile my five favorite overreactions to anything.

5. Witty and Certain | Season 3

I genuinely like both of these boarders but if this moment wasn't on the list then the entire thing would be full of shit. Witty wrote his verse and was going to post it because he thought he was on time. Then Certain in so many words told him that he was wrong.

Witty, after realizing he was late, accepted it but hated Certain's tone.

Certain wanted to make sure it didn't happen again so he gave a smartass remark and all hell broke loose.

What should've been seen as a simple mistake in time management turned into like ten pages of people arguing back and forth over this shit. Really, number 5 could be seen as the entire god damn AOWL for giving that big of a fuck about it in the first place.

4. Everyone who complains about Frank being Frank | Every season

Frank is great at fucking with his opponent's head when facing them. He'll ask for an extension just so he can drop a 200 line verse about Harry Truman. He'll edit his verse a minute after the deadline, because why not?

We all know he does this, and people still bitch every time it happens. Why? Did you forget he's Frank? Are you fucking stupid?

I'm one of the few people who genuinely thinks that Frank is hilarious. He could say, "You suck," and within ten minutes fourteen people have gotten furious. That's hilarious. If it pisses you off, then guess what? Frank just made you his bitch. Get over it.

3. Dagel | Season 1
Reason: Being Dagel.

Dagel was put in the pink division in season 1 but wanted to be moved. So I told him no one cares, jokingly I might add, and he got angry. So Atheist and Cereal Killa posted pictures of female salon products, which were all pink, in the chat prediction thread until Dagel killed himself.

Jk. He actually signed up to lyrical assault immediately afterwards just to call everyone on NC trolls and total losers and he was never seen again.

Jk. He came back under like seventeen different names, and I'm almost positive he's in the league right now. One name in particular sounds an awful like a Dagel alias. Female salon photos are imminent.

2. Dove Dozer aka No Good | Season 2
Reason: Being kicked out of his mod spot.

This is another person I like and the two other people involved in this I like, too: Mike Wrecka, and Certain Serpent makes his second appearance on the list which by default makes him the most infamous villain in the AOWL.

Remember how in the beginning of AOWL Season 2 there were three mods? Yeah, I didn't think so.Honestly I didn't see Dove Dozer do anything, but he was the third mod. Maybe he did something behind the scenes, but what we as participants saw was Mike and Certain. So what happened? Well, they kicked him the fuck out.

He posted in the week two thread saying he got kicked out while dealing with family problems, and then we didn't see him for awhile. In fact he came back in the week 4 mag to passive aggressively say, "pretty decent mag." And that's pretty much been it from Dozer in the league. He's posted some in the OM, but fuck the AOWL. I gree wif him on dat cuz yall stupid.

1. ZeeDee | Season 1
Reason:
Quote:
Originally Posted by ZeeDee View Post

and you reward yourself for being fags... classic.... bye bitches...
For the record, he set the font size to 5 himself. Not me.

Where do I begin with ZeeDee? He was a talented writer and even champed season 1, but holy fuck balls this guy was a total cunt. Every time he posted it was bitching about something when there was usually nothing to bitch about. He always found something though. That quote I posted up there was just the first one I found. Half of his posts are exactly like that. If you weren't involved in season 1 just imagine like four weeks of that in a fucking row.

And why was he mad in the first place? Because he champed the league and didn't get an accomplishment for it. I assume at first he didn't get it because the mods genuinely forgot, or because there were no admins running the AOWL at the time with the power to add accomplishments. But I'm pretty sure after he cried every week the mods just said, "eh, fuck it." ZeeDee's posts were so bad I literally almost made this article just about him. Wait...maybe that's an idea for next week...

Honorable Mention: Zenland
Reason: I seriously wrote an article about people taking things too seriously, and I call myself the People's Champ.

I'm still the People's Champ though.

Well, I hoped you all enjoyed it, but more than likely you only read the parts of the mag that involved you. If you're one of those people, you're a narcissistic piece of shit and I didn't write this article for you anyway faggot. For everyone else, this is the only part of the site that's slightly active. So pat yourself on the back for that, you nerds. Peace.

Week 13 Rewind
BATTLE REVIEWS by Certain
Movie-title week wasn't quite as strong as the previous two, but there were a lot of good verses and competitive battles, even those that didn't reflect it in voting. Voting was probably the biggest problem of the week.

1. zygote (10-3) beats Soulstice (1-4) 4-3. | The Long Goodbye
BATTLE OF THE WEEK! Man, Soulstice has bad luck. This week's stumble (note that two of his four losses were via no-show) came to a powerhouse abstract verse by zygote, who channeled a kaleidoscope of reflections on humanity, government and personal freedoms to go along with a gimmick in which the first letter of each line spelled out "Goodbye" with a lot of O's. zygote's rhyming was sharp, and his thoughts were as well in a highly quotable submission. I didn't think it adhered to the topic as well as Soulstice's, though. Soulstice wrote about what appeared to be a girl who has to rescue her brother after her parents' deaths or kidnappings. The vagueness cost him some votes, particularly because it seemed that a number of voters misinterpreted the verse. But his writing was sharp, and he wrote a verse that would have beaten many this week.

2. Cereal_Killa (4-1) beats Frank (9-4) 4-1. | Trouble in Paradise
That was the best verse I've seen from Cereal_Killa, and with that, he locks himself into the playoffs and gets a shiny champed badge to add to his collection of accomplishments in a decade-or-so of topical writing. Cereal_Killa wrote about love amid strife, but mostly he wrote. His words often come out too flowery and poetic, but here he hit that poetry so well that even frequent critics couldn't deny the power of his words. Frank tried to play counter-puncher with a very straight-forward, detail-oriented story about a Las Vegas casino cheat, and he did it really well. The story moved with great pacing, and Frank's full abilities were on display. It just felt smaller and less essential than Cereal_Killa's verse.

3. Adonis (6-7) beats Vulgar (5-4) 4-1. | The Asphalt Jungle
All three of the top battles were very, very good, and this order could have been swapped easily. Now that we have that out of the way, we can discuss the best verse I've read from Adonis. He took the simple approach of writing from the perspective of a coca leaf, turned into cocaine and brought from South America to the asphalt jungle of Southern California. What I liked most was that he made no attempt to hide his subject matter for some big reveal twist. But his language was eloquent and subtle, and he structured his verse in a reader-friendly way. Vulgar made no concessions with his verse, which felt more like the Vulgar vintage we're used to on the heavily abstract tip. It was less approachable than his best abstract work, with points of references that would have required a lot of research on voters' parts to uncover. But when he finds his rhythm with these pieces, he can be great.

4. cyph her (1-1) beats Zenland (1-2) 7-1. | Coming Home
This was a rematch of cyph her's only other battle on this site, which came with a bit of an emergency for her and led to her posting a short, off-topic verse. It suffices to say she did no such thing in the second go-around. Her verse fell off the beaten path as far as this genre goes, with a unique and clumsey rhyme scheme and a favoring of simple but unique phrasing. That created a suffocating atmosphere about the worst kind of homecoming. Zenland wrote about drugs. (Of course Zenland wrote about drugs.) In this case, he took it as rehab and recovery. While his rhyme schemes easily were better than his opponents', he failed to set up that same atmosphere and ended on a cheesy note.

5. Vividlyvague (7-5) beats timeless (6-7) 5-0. | Boys Don't Cry
It's always interesting when a writer goes autobiographical, but Vividlyvague took it to the next level. He (she?) told us the story of his (her?) sex change operation and how an abusive father led to that traumatic decision. This verse was so full of intimate detail that it was impossible not to vote for, particularly because it fit the topic immaculately well. Vividlyvague's dialogue and diction were a little sloppy, but it's easy to understand how some things could be out of order when remembering them from personal experience. timeless went a very safe and flat route with his verse, which probably would have been stronger had he stuck with one vignette and fleshed it out rather than trying three. He told the story about a boy who cries in losing the loves of his life, but hip hop never really fit.

6. Johnathan Mercy (4-2) wins via King Ra. (6-6) no-show. | One False Move
I hate it when my favorite topic gets no-showed. Thanks, King Ra. What's interesting is that Johnathan Mercy unleashed perhaps his weakest verse since signing up (and not including the 12-liner he dropped against Vividlyvague). That's not to say this autobiographic verse wasn't very good, as the rhyming and cadence were strong and there were a lot of interesting thoughts. But it didn't seem as tightly wound as the best things Johnathan Mercy has shown us. I expect a bounce-back in the championship.

7. Certain (3-4) wins via Perpendicular (1-3) no-show. | From Here to Eternity
It's a shame Perpendicular no-showed because he totally could have beaten another super-boring verse by Certain.

NO-SHOW SHINE by Vividlyvague
Our transgender friend takes a stab at reviewing the two verses that didn't get voted on from last week.

Certain | From Here to Eternity
What a deep piece. For me, this al came full circle after reading it once, then reading the first stanza once more. This a was a travel through our space to find, or define, time. The premise was unassuming at first, but it all hits like a bag of bricks here:

"It turns the leaves, brown now. Once a perfect green.
And that alone means we haven't found Eternity."

I think this is worth a read, just for how Certain laid this out alone. I really dug this approach, and I, an over-the-top writer, very much appreciate subtlety and nuance, as it is something I have yet to master. Great job.

Johnathan Mercy | One False Move
In "The Biography Paradox (Johns)", John seems to break himself down in the [fourth person ?], measuring two personalities, while scathing them both with another. This felt incomplete at the end, but he also semed to have noted that within the piece as the topic tie-in, also sprinkling in some humor towards the back end of it. I think the effort was battle level, but it still possessed the air of a no-show verse... kind of like a flex almost. The concept was cool, but ended abruptly.

My fave part:

"Help, help I've become deranged and myopic
a note stating 'I HATE YOU' has been placed in my pocket
my speech rhymes and I'm unable to stop it
and I'm terribly afraid I'll get brained by a plot twist!"

The rhyming was consistent and the impressive usual. I think I would like to have seen some kind of expanded and explored version of this. Good Job though, JM.

Week 14 Preview
POWER RANKINGS by Adonis
The Greek god of desire apparently didn't desire to rank more than six people, which makes sense since the league's ranks are pretty thin at the moment. Last week's records were by me.

6. Vulgar (5-4)
Last week: No. 4, lost to Adonis
I would say, the past three weeks you were on a very hot streak in my opinion. Then you dropped some throwback Vulgar where nobody truly gets it. You didn't have the strongest of rhyme nor did you connect. Yet, when people actually read it more than once, in the hopes to grasp, simply thoroughly enjoy. This week, Vulgar defined regression. This scares me. As long as I've known this guy he's never ever ever had back to back verses I disliked. So, in a sense I truly do look forward to what a forward thinking mind can create. I enjoy your philosophical phantasm, but if you wish to champ, you will have to improve on this weeks drop, finding the middle ground of depth and voter friendly my friend. You did better the previous weeks.

5. Cereal Killa (4-1)
Last week: No. 5, beat Frank in championship
CK, you are a strange case. Regardless of being our champ, I could easily leave you off this list and not bat an eye. But dude, you actually WON the belt!!! Beating elite talent dropping an elite verse none the less. CK, you have been around for ages, I can attest to this. But what you've never done is combined all your talents, (Imagery, Violence and Rhyme Scheme) at the same time. You still haven't, but last week you wrote at the very least the second best offering that I personally read closing in on a decade or so. You are a person who if, a big if, is given the chance by the reader, to delve in, They might actually get what you shot for. Although this is impossible on only one read, you can blow a brain cell or two if you kept the style and some how found a way to write for votes, maintaing that raw, ruggid , grotesque feel while comprimising slightly, for the ability to obtain your new sought after badge of honer. But, alas, you are ranked relatively low because in my eyes you only won a single battle all season, (I do not count my loss) but beating Frank, what a building block. Foundation grow.

4. Soulstice (1-4)
Last week: No. 6, lost to zygote
So I do the Power Rankings randomly in various weeks. But when I do, I always throw in a person I enjoy yet seems to lack the populace vote. Last time I ranked Sacrifice #1 and he lost two in a row before signing out. I hope I don't jinx you as well sir. Soul, you posses dope concepts, decent schemes, decent delivery, decent execution. You can beat the best of the best easily; IF, you execute. But you seem to thrive in some areas while lacking in others constantly. You seem to lack the ability to hone all talents and drop that BOMB!!! Although the potential is there, I can chalk this up to you not fully trying and waiting until the last second to scrape into the playoffs. You on the other hand, can chalk it up to laziness abd the lack of willingness of participation in weeks, or wisdom to prook read one final time. Either way, you belong here. When your competition finally reads a verse that resonates, they shall understand.

3. Frank (9-4)
Last week: No. 2, lost to Cereal_Killa in championship
My biggest fan. You can write the longest verse I've ever read, this is how I've grown to know you; power with length, not with strength. But last week you had a simple verse that was short and powerful, extremely concise. You are the opposite of a bottom feeder, (see who he battles this week with his low ranking). You destroy the easy competition, and when faced with elite talent will at the very least make it a 1-2 vote decision. Frank, you've been around the block, but I must say this season you seem to have faltered a bit along with us all. Not the strongest of competition now, but even if it were, Frank would be placed around here regardless.

2. Zygote (10-3)
Last week: No. 3, beat Soulstice
I criticized you early on because you lacked something. The past couple of weeks, you found it. Not writing gimmicks, even though you might; but by placing true value and wisdom within your words. Zygote, you are a thinker. I, nor anyone else can ever take that away from you. You once had sub par, pedestrian even, rhymes. While this was what was lacked, you slowly improved and now when I read your shit, I don't notice rhymes. Instead, I notice words. And when I go back to check, I see that it does rhyme. This is equivalent to a verse with “NATURAL” conversation that rolls off the tongue with rhyme, yet still follows said natural conversation (extremely rare). The thing I appreciate most about my friend, is you come up with different takes and topic selection than the normal AOWList. I try and do the same, even if people don't get it, which I praise you for; because your writing style is so in the face that the reader has to get it. Sure I'd like to see more complexity, but in reality, I enjoy reading your shit. So, if you havn't changed from week one to now, only my reading habits have, then do you patawan.

1. Johnathan Mercy (4-2)
Last week: No. 1, won via King Ra. no-show in contender match
I don't know where to begin fag. Your writing is out there. It's not possible to understand what you are going for on the first read, as it might not be possible to grasp on the third read either. The trick is to take away what can BE taken away. I can't criticize you for being too deep, like Vulgar, I know I must take away my own interpretation. We must gather our own thoughts and just vote. Your depth right now has no equal. Your content is intriguing, but finding that happy median with being voter friendly here, is your task. I haven't talked about rhyme schemes have I??? There is nothing I can say beside, “if we were all like Merc regarding multie after multie of synchronized schemes that just meld into one whole piece...Well, we can all dream right”? The fact you can fit a message or meaning beside your complex equation is beyond me.

I like the concept of audio predictions and probably will stick with them for the rest of the season unless you'd all prefer something else.

Looking Ahead
PLAYOFF PICTURE by Certain
Here we take a look at the format of the playoffs and what your odds are of making it.

There will be 16 writers in the playoffs barring an unforseen number of rejected automatic spots. Here are the logistics for qualification, as stated since the beginning of the season in the rules thread:

Quote:
Originally Posted by Certain View Post

The playoffs will feature 12 to 24 competitors, as will be determined by no later than Week 14 by the moderators based on number of automatic bids and other stipulations. Competitors who want a bid in the playoffs will need to sign up for the playoffs during Week 16.

Bids will go to:
  • anyone who held the regular-season title.
  • anyone who competed in 14 weeks of the regular season without a no-show, disqualification or lack of votes. Note: Every verse posted must be rhymed and related to the topic to some degree.
  • anyone who qualifies by record, including tiebreakers, following the formula below.
Qualification tiebreakers:
  1. Wins. This means 6-10 is better than 5-1.
  2. Win-loss record. This means 5-1 is better than 5-2.
  3. Head-to-head record. So two 8-5 people who faced each other would be seeded according to who won a head-to-head battle.
  4. Common opponents. If the two 8-5 people never faced or split two matchups, results against common opponents will be taken into account to break ties.
  5. Strength of wins. This tiebreaker will look at the number of wins accumulated by the competitors each person in the tie has beaten.
  6. Voting margin. This part of the process hopefully will not come into effect with other margins factored in, but if necessary, the total margin of votes in all matches will be used as the final tiebreaker.

The title-holder at the end of the regular season automatically receives the No. 1 seed for the playoffs. All other seeding will be based on the qualification tiebreakers.
So what does that mean for you? Because of where we're at in the season, I definitively can say that six wins guarantees a spot in the playoffs. Let's take a look at who definitely is in, by those measures:

That means 10 of the 16 spots already are guaranteed. Now let's look at the small group of people with four and five wins. For this group, records need to be taken into account, as there is the chance that some could be left out by tiebreakers. But five wins is almost a guarantee to make it, and even four could be enough depending on circumstances. Here's the group, ranked by record (asterisks indicate currently signed-in members):

Just Write is the only member in that group who might have to worry about his spot, and he could all-but seal it by signing in and winning even once. But the two- and three-win crowd is rather thick and has no such luxuries. There's almost no way someone could get in with two wins, but a two-win person definitely could sign in now and sneak in with wins in the last two weeks.

This list makes things look good for Certain and patrown, since both are signed in now and have at least one extra shot at a key victory. But Bladed Thesis could sign in now, win in the last two weeks and steal a playoff spot.

I'm not going to list out every person with one win because the odds of making the playoffs with only three wins is unlikely. But there are two currently signed-in members, @Soulstice and @cyph her, who potentially could get in if they win out and reach four wins.

With all that said, if the season ended today, here's the outlook for the 16-man bracket, plus anyone one victory away from being on the right side of the bubble:
  • 1. Cereal_Killa (4-1, current champion)*
  • 2. zygote (10-3)*
  • 3. oats (9-3)
  • 4. Frank (9-4)*
  • 5. Vividlyvague (7-5)*
  • 6. King Ra. (6-6)
  • 7. timeless (6-7)
  • 8. Adonis (6-7)*
  • 9. Zombie (5-0)
  • 10. El Pancake (5-3)
  • 11. Vulgar (5-4)*
  • 12. Mike Wrecka (5-5)*
  • 13. Johnathan Mercy (4-2)
  • 14. Chief Justice Wright (4-4)
  • 15. Ink (3-1)
  • 16. Split Eight (3-3)
  • CUT LINE
  • Certain (3-4)*
  • YDK (3-4)
  • Bladed Thesis (2-0)
  • rhetoric (2-1)
  • patrown (2-2)*
  • Pinot Grij (2-2)

That means that, at the moment, if everyone signed up for the playoffs, the first-round matchups would be:

1. Cereal_Killa vs. 16. Split Eight
8. Adonis vs. 9. Zombie
5. Vividlyvague vs. 12. Mike Wrecka
4. Frank vs. 13. Johnathan Mercy
3. oats vs. 14. Chief Justice Wright
6. King Ra. vs. 11. Vulgar
7. timeless vs. 10. El Pancake
2. zygote vs. 15. Ink

That seems pretty awesome, even if there's no way it ends up like that.

Any further questions can be sent my way. I hope this has provided some clarity.

So You Ign'ant Hear Me
CONCLUSION by Certain

That's all, folks. Thanks to Zenland, Vividlyvague and Adonis for their contributions. Thanks to all of you for reading. Have a good one.

You actually have an outside chance if you go 3-0 and a couple people don't want in.

@Adonis

I have a lengthy track record of blowing out elite writers. In fact I have been in very few close match ups. My vote count ratio may the best in AOWL history. You may think I have 'faltered', which I find interesting and I would appreciate if you could elaborate on that. Thanks

Well. You seem to be writing shorter verses for one, which isn't bad. You also seem to have experimented a bit more then you're a typical rhyme structure. Again, not bad. When I say falter, you take it as offense. Would it be better if I said try harder? I think you lost a bit of luster bro. Almost like at times you just type what comes out and expect to win. Notice how you I ranked you number two,and said even if there were stronger competition you would still have about the same rank regardless?take the good and the bad and elevate

Also you suck at voting. I realize you don't like me and I don't care, but a little explanation from yourself would be nice. This post is about the length of your combined votes either for or against me for as long as I've been here

Cereal killa is a cool champ because he isnt as rhyme heavy as other champions actually the only rhyme heavy champs so far would be zombie/oats. pancake/zygote/cereal killa are all on the same boat mechanically; i think zygote being the best outta that bunch, followed by pancake. thought pancake has small jumps of rhyme crazy zones that show how capable he is. cereal hasnt demonstrated that but im sure he can do that, just doesnt fit his style. interesting to see the champ match with jm and his rhyme crazy style that doesnt really impress me as others seem to be infatuated with. i king rhymer. zombie my bitch dull boy my bitch, bwhaha mybitch. jk fuck dey good but! tyeah
