Battling Vs. Topical writing, again, huh?

Battling is very one dimensional.

I'm cocky and I can turn phrases and knowledge of personal information into gimmicky jokes, and on my better days can mix in some wordplay for style points.

It's fun, but I really don't understand how people can do it beyond a certain amount of time. Especially when you're trying to WIN battles. Voting is on some school yard popularity, majority style rule type shit. It gets old for anyone with a little more than half a brain.

A lot of winning battles involves building a reputation. Reputation makes mediocre bars good and good bars great. Like @oats said, if you look at a verse from someone with a reputation as a battler, then you perceive it differently. The more a 'persona' lets on weakness, or vulnerability, the more the audience will turn on them. The attitude is all part of the performance. It's why actors in an established role seem out of place in another, even if they are quality performers in the new role. It takes time for your perception to shift.
