I'll take Jay Z's fifth-best album over Nas' second-best.

Distant Relatives is better than all but Reasonable Doubt, The Blueprint, and The Black Album. It's not a true Nas album but the same could probably be said about God's Son.

Jay's lows aren't as low, though.

Nas was a victim of his greatest success happening too early his career. He has undeniable talent, but Illmatic overshadows all of his later work by its status as THE iconic hip hop album from the golden era of hip hop. That's not something anyone can top, not even Nas. But every step of the way he's been expected to try, despite the fact that Illmatic was so classic because it was an unforced, honest expression of a young black mans life in America.

He was successful too young, held captive by a music industry that doesn't understand his art but only popularity. He style is the epitome of underground lyricist, but he shuttled towards the role of mafioso kingpin (which nobody believed sorry Nas), because gangsta rap was big at the time, and pretend playboy gigolo (sorry you still need more people) with Ginuwine. Nas is not a pop artist, which his catalogue makes pretty clear, but apparently none of his producers are Nas fans.

Illmatic > Stillmatic / Distant Relatives / Lost Tapes / Reasonable Doubt / Blueprint / Black Album > 90% of Jay's Catologue / God's Son > Jay's wackest albums > 90% of Nas' Catologue >>>>>>> Nas' wackest albums

also, Nas doesn't just have a classic. He has THE classic, which is different.

but he has produced a peculiar amount of mediocre and sub-par tracks.
yea that's pretty bad as a bar. his remix with ludacris was dope tho , made you look remix i believe

Stylistically, Nas' influence is well understood.

He's a straight Rapper man Rapper bro. Nas isn't Kendrick, which you may know already. He got caught up in being a rap image though. I didn't intend for any of that to rhyme. I'm fucked up.

Point is, Nas done did what he did and your mediocre branding, @Certain, is only relative to his celebrity. Or maybe you just wonder why he can't make good music anymore. It's the same reason we can't write quite like we used to. Fuck I'm deep; moms inheritance.
No, you misunderstand. I respect the hell out of Nas. He's one of my favorites ever. What's frustrating is that he has spent 20 years trying to be something he's not way too often. He still can make great music. There were some great tracks on Life Is Good. But he seems completely unaware of his own strengths.

So yes, his influence and respect make him more relevant than Prodigy. That was a bad word choice. But Prodigy understands who he is and puts himself in better position to succeed. Nas is fighting a battle that won't ever be won.

In short, Nas is too talented to have had this career.

Truth. I never would have guessed in 2000 that a Styles P album (A Gangster and a Gentleman) would be the LOX solo album I like the most.
