heaths joker was maybe more reserved than most portrayals but he was grounded in a more realistic world than the others
batman wasn't battling flying alien dudes and shit
I think as an actor, you get a little more leeway in those worlds
I thought ledger played insane perfectly, which was all the joker had as powers in the nolanverse

I also think had he not died, we would have seen a crazier version of heath's joker in the third film, that was hinted to in the dark knight, like when he made the little video shots. the one where he says 'LOOK AT ME' hints at what I think he was going to bring out later.
