As for hurting. It is a valid line of reasoning when dealing with an individual who continually rejects building a relationship and antagonizes as if begging to confirm their own misperceptions of others and thier perceptions of themselves.

I do not expect you to understand that. Not because you can’t but because you would refuse to.

Which is in my opinion worse.
