my partner lost her nan of 80 years back in january, who played a big part in raising her.

as someone who never really had grandparents myself, i struggled to empathize but suggested she be thankful for having her at all. she showed me she was deeply grateful for the time she had had - privileged, even - and that is ultimately what gave all the gravity to the pain therein.

there's a joy to that sorrow, marrying the opposites.
