But even a good album like Controversy was a clear step down from the other work he put out in the early 1980s.

Dirty Mind, 1999, Purple Rain and Sign 'O' the Times stand very tall in the Prince discography. Every Prince fan has another two or three albums they put on that level —for me, Parade and The Love Symbol Album —but those are the four unanimously agreed-upon classics in a 39-album discography.
