The M-16 was created during Vietnam War for the purpose of maiming. A small 5.56 mm caliber bounces around a person's insides, by shooting one person, you take 3 people out of the fight because two guys are dragging one person to be tended to.

At least that's what they taught me during my schooling in the Navy
