You're underestimating powerful people's egos in an era where the proletariat still had some semblance of power to change things. They invented this mystique to keep themselves from being challenged. The best part of all of that is it came tumbling down anyway thanks to Teddy Roosevelt. Yet here you all are, clinging to late 19th/early 20th century corpses as if they are relevant in today's world.
