I have a headphone wire coming out if the audio output headphone jack into the audio input jack on the sub .....all it does is hummm deep buzzy bass

You need an adapter most likely. Something that can convert normal audio to surround. http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Analog...o++Decoder+5.1 <- like that one. Not that exact one, but something similar.
