I'm not so sure on the outcome. It's got so many more moving pieces and possible situations than Afghanistan did, especially now. And the actual rebels are more interested in liberty than religion, while Mujahideen is literally jihadist. Similar on the surface, maybe.

diplomatically, probably. It's basically just them wanting to protect economic and political interests. Especially after the soviet occupation of afghanistan i doubt they'd be willing to send military there. The biggest conflict between major nations will be political.
