I was always your least favourite. You would never admit it
but I saw how you treated the rest of my siblings.
I guess I was different. The middle child. Bottom bunk of the bed
never fulfilling the heights my older brother had set.
The younger one slept in his own room, you never gave a thought
to decorating all of our room with freshly painted walls.
You let them play with balls in the house and fight on the rug,
They used to get away with more than I ever could.
I tried being goody two-shoes, but even those had been second hand
guess following right in his footsteps is as close as I’ll get to that.
While Golden boy gets the laughs, it’s like you aren’t aware I exist
people forget it completely unless they’re looking to compare me to him.
It’s so unfair how my little brother gets what’s he wants
yet I’m the one called a big baby when I tell you it’s wrong
I’ve never been one to ask for much because I know I won’t get it
so I lowered my expectations to help me cope with rejection.
There’s no use pretending you love us half as much the same
even the candles on my cake were reused from the last one that you made.

must have mixed up your offspring again, cause I don’t even like cinnamon frosting.
This must be one of those days where a full house feels like an empty room
I’ve got a lot of gifts, but all I wanted in the present sense is…
You pretended to care, but only cared what the others thought
shoved me in a corner like something unimportant and barely looked at me at all.
Your other sons were more academic, heads buried in the back of a book,
I was just as good at sports — but that never mattered as much.
I’ve lived in the shadow my brother created ever since
playing second fiddle in a band of brothers upstaged by next of kin.
I hated every minute. I have since the day I was born
In my high chair I learned my place at the table before I was able to crawl.
It’s my birthday and you’ve ordered the cheapest cake on the shelf
paid someone else for the hassle of having to make one yourself.
They layered a velvet sponge no one likes to dress it up as something new
and covered up the truth just like my mother used to do.
Underneath the boutique exterior, at the heart of the cake you’ll

No matter how marbled the layers used, there’s still some margin between

No party’s complete without its cake.
