The best ending would have been him getting caught, I think. That's kind of what the fans, or at least I, always wanted. Then the fall out and explanations, reactions from Miami Metro, his stepkids, etc.

They tried to do too much when a home run of an ending was there from Day 1.

I think it would've been better if all of miami metro pooled together an bought dexter his first car so he could go to job interviews. then he writes a touching thank you/goodbye letter to his friend/mentor Robin Williams & when Ben affleck goes by his apartment to pick him up for the bar .......he's just gone.
