These things aren't haphazardly thrown together with everyone getting bombed and staggering up to the stage to ramble and throw out some jokes.
Really, it's how everything should be done. Even at a site like this, take the tag tournament for example. You should be talking over your lines with your partner, working on how to word them most effectively and how to better spin the name plays. This netceeing stuff isn't serious enough to make that worthwhile, but it would be a big advantage to anyone who took that time.
So yes, Jeff Ross writes his own material. But he probably doesn't write all of it, and he definitely goes over it with the other writers beforehand, again, if only to let them know what he's doing. And when you're a professional comedy writer listening to another professional comedy writer read his latest material, of course you're going to say "I didn't like that line," or "You should start with that," or "That's a great idea, but you've got to add something to it."
That's just professionalism.
