Welcome back boys and girls to another Netcees tournament - hot off the back of the last one, which happened right after the one before that. We are averaging one every month and a half. BAM BAM BAM. Who said text was dead? The last two tournaments have been so successful that we are now going to try to run TWO tournaments here concurrently - one for topicals (same form as the previous two tourneys) and one for regular battles, which haven’t really been a thing here for a couple of years. Can we do it?! Yes we can. The interest in the topical side of things looks to be stronger for now, but I and ChatGPT will prop this up wherever it’s needed. We will have zero no shows here. I will be delivering quality mags each round and detailed votes on every single battle. Please also do your part comrades - show up, vote, engage. Make Netcees Great Again.

TOPICAL DIVISION
These were done pseudo randomly, I just put the eight names down and had the bracket maker generate it a couple of times until the one ChatGPT contestant was against someone I was fairly confident would show up in round 1.

REGULAR DIVISION
Well we only managed to get five sign ins for regular battles where I was hoping for eight and tbh I’m not super confident about all of those five showing up lol. So, I’ve decided to put everyone against an AI opponent in round 1. I’ll give you a bio for the ‘person’ you’re against so you don’t have to write a verse full of generics. Then I’ll make a proper bracket in round 2 with seeding dependent on your round 1 performance.

BATTLER PROFILES

@symetrik
Mr Almost. Sym is IMO one of the most talented writers here, but somehow hasn’t got a single tourney win or league championship to his name (that I’m aware of). It might be fair to say he’s only recently grown into his natural talent - figuring out how to turn good writing into good writing that also rhymes and flows well in a way that resonates with voters. He made it to the finals of the first of these topical tourneys we’ve run this year and was defeated there by Etherwave, then came back swinging with a strong opening round in the next tourney. Unfortunately time seemed to get the better of him in round two and he posted what most felt was an incomplete verse, which saw him eliminated there. Has he finally got both the time and the experience to go all the way here?

@Regulator
You may know him as Eviction or Dia, among many of his aliases. The first of only two competitors to sign up for both disciplines here. While he’s had a fair bit of experience in both, he’s had far more success in topicals than in regular battles. He was a regular feature in the contender and championship matches of AOWL season 10 and even managed to defeat @NYCSPITZ in a title match, which he absolutely will not let anyone forget. While his writing can sometimes lack clarity and focus as an entire piece, line by line he writes in an engaging and evocative way, and his rhyming, flow and vocabulary are very solid. Somewhat of a dark horse I’d say - he might not be considered one of the best but he absolutely can and will catch you slipping if you underestimate him. Can he add to his accolades here? Let’s find out.

@Etherwave
The second of our two double threats competing in both disciplines. Etherwave is a relatively new name on Netcees but she’s already established herself in the topical arena - she was the champion of our first tourney this year and put up a good show in two rounds of the next one before being taken out by yours truly. Her style often leans more toward poetry than hip hop but we’ve seen what she can do in terms of rhyme schemes when she wants to. So much so that Lars has accused her of being a Frank alias. She’s making her regular battle debut here (OR IS SHE? Frank certainly did both disciplines) and I’m looking forward to seeing what she can do with it.

@Goatmilk713
A brand new competitor. Like literally they don’t even have a single post yet because our admins and supermods are AWOL and aren’t approving new members to post, apparently. I know nothing about this writer except that they were referred to us by Etherwave. Are they a man? A woman? A child? Is it an Etherwave alias? Is this Alias-ception? Let’s see how their writing looks. If they can’t post they will PM me their verses and I’ll post for them.

@Scar
Scar has been around on Netcees, off and on, for five or so years. I don’t know his history before that but it’s clear he has some experience in topicals. There’s some obvious talent there. He was taken out in round one of the last tourney by symetrik but it was one of those battles where you really wish both guys could advance. He’s picked up a GWL championship against Universe a few years ago and will be looking to add to his champed list here.

@ACTIVATE SELF
I wasn’t familiar with this guy, so I searched for all threads containing ACTIVATE in the name to find any battles he had. I was initially very surprised to see dozens and dozens of them, then I realised he had no showed in like 90%. Soooo that would be why I don’t know him. He has picked up an AOWL champ somewhere along the way though and when he does post it’s clear he has some talent. Will he show up here to make a claim or do I have to break out another Chat GPT verse?

@brokenhal0
Halo has champed not just a regular week but a whole season of AOWL. He has a unique and distinctive style, - a flood of creative visuals held together with a rhyme scheme that leans more towards free form but works well enough for him. Like Regulator it’s sometimes difficult to find the central premise or a cohesive story in his work, but his writing appeals to voters nonetheless and opponents are cautioned against underestimating him.

@John Dillinger
John was one of the first guys I battled on Netcees version 1 when I arrived, and I remember writing bars about how he was like 14 years old or something then. It blows my mind to realise he’s now a full blown adult (and has been for some time). He’s been around for a long time but very on again off again. He’s back now after quite a hiatus, will that mean he’s rusty, or is he returning to us wiser and sharper than ever? He’s been prone to no show in the past but looks to be interested in making a real go of it now. Here’s hoping!

Saint has been around a long time and is one of these guys who has managed to be competitive across multiple sites and multiple styles. Great concepts, great mechanics. He sometimes cops some heat for having overly complicated wording, but make no mistake - when he gets that right he can drop some bangers. He has an impressive list of accomplishments to his name already, can he add another here?

I’m not familiar with this guy and a three character name makes it difficult for me to do my homework on him when the search function requires a minimum of four characters. I saw a bunch of no shows in what I did find, and I haven’t seen any activity from him since signing in, so I’m guessing it’s gonna be a no show here. FGR, prove me wrong! I’ll happily eat my words.

ROUND ONE MATCH UPS

Well it’s a guy I think is quite a talent vs a total unknown, so I’m gonna say 70-30 to sym. That said, if Etherwave *is* Frank then it’s almost certain that Goatmilk is too. Thennnn we’ve got a battle on our hands for sure. Probably they are not Frank, but it’s fun to speculate, and tbh I can definitely see where Lars is coming from with the accusation. There’s some definite similarities in the styles and Frank is known to be a serial alias maker. There’s not tooooo much going on in this picture, but it’s an easy jump off point for a story about or reflection on any number of things. Looking forward to seeing what you guys do with it.

Look at this good boy. What is he looking at? I can’t wait for these guys to tell us. If both bring their fullest potential I’ll give this one to Scar for probably a more coherent piece, but it may come down to voter preference. I expect Halo to bring his trademark barrage of creative visuals, and if he can thread it all together he could definitely take the dub. 60-40 Scar.

ACTIVATE SELF vs Regulator

Who is this sinister looking figure and what’s he doing in this amusement park?! We’re about to find out. OR maybe these guys will interpret the picture as a metaphor for… something. I think this one is ACTIVATE’s to lose. Regulator is pretty consistent, both in terms of actually showing up and in terms of the level he posts at. I think ACTIVATE’s best work beats that, but he’s much more of a wild card. 55-45 ACTIVATE.

Etherwave vs fraze

And finally for our topical battles we have a recent topical tourney champion Etherwave against a last minute replacement for ChatGPT, fraze. I’m not familiar with fraze and at this point I’m just trying to get the mag done and posted, so I’m just going to hazard a guess and say Etherwave 65-35. Show up and regale us with an aquatic adventure and I’ll say nice things about you and make memes starring you next week.

All regular battlers vs an AI opponent

ChatGPT can do an almost decent job at a topical piece, it just doesn’t really do multisyllabic rhyming. Regular battles are a different deal. AI really does not grasp the nuances of human humour at all yet. If you lose to the AI you need to sign out forever. That said - I am going to determine the seeding for the rest of the tournament based on your round one verses, so don’t slouch!

THROWBACK BATTLE - TOPICAL

The battle I’ve chosen for the topical throwback is the insaneeee three way final of the Guerilla Writing League held in 2020, between @deadman, Clutbuck (aka @sral), and @Universe. If someone who’d never set foot in these rap forums asked me to explain what this is all about, this is what I’d show them. I can’t think of a single better showcase of the art form. We have three very different takes on the topic, three very different styles, and ultimately three very high quality verses. The only things they really have in common is that they all rhyme well and are inspired by the same image. This final didn’t really get the love it deserved - the battle ultimately closed at 3-0 to deadman after a couple of weeks, so please offer up any thoughts you have on it now for these guys.

THROWBACK BATTLE - REGULAR

For the regular battles, here’s another one from 2020 (man the pandemic really brought text alive again, briefly). This an NBL championship match between @Blue Bayou and @Zuch. I picked this one to again try to showcase different styles - generally speaking it’s Blue with the clever wordplays and Zuch with the more direct but very creative lines (although both did a little of each). 60 lines is a pretty tough feat for a text battle but these guys made it look easy. This one actually did get its flowers at the time - somewhere around 15 votes which is incredible for this/that day and age and really speaks to the quality of the verses for that many people to read and comment on them. Ultimately, most voters picked Blue here and he won fairly comfortably, though Zuch undeniably had a great verse too. Let us know your favourite lines, folks.
