I completely disagree with the mixtape comment. It had a very unified sound. Mixtapes tend to be all over the place and very, very long. This was compressed and unified, a la Illmatic or The Great Adventures of Slick Rick or The Black Album or Hell Hath No Fury or Rip the Jacker or many other short, classic albums. At 44 minutes, 7 seconds, it's longer than most of those.

The beats were varied, from great to good. Which ones didn't you like?

The issue is that Earl Sweatshirt simply has no other mode. He's laconically oozing multiple-syllable rhymes every time out. As I said on the first thread about this album, he has my favorite style going when he's going at it for a track or two. But the monotony doesn't do him favors when listening to 15 tracks at once. The guest appearances are welcome, and most of them are really strong.

I'd give this 8.5 out of 10.

its not that i didnt like the beats its
some beats + that lazy monotone flow is just awful

all i meant in the mixtape thing was that i felt some songs should have more verses or be longer, maybe shoulda said something else iunno

Every mixtape (along with most albums these days) seems to be 70 minutes. It's fucking stupid. Make good songs that work together to make a good album. Sometimes, that's a long album. Muddy Waters is 67 minutes but fits together perfectly.

The Gifted seems like a mixtape because Wale is incapable of artistic statements.

Nah, I didn't mean it like that entirely. OK, partially.

I'm just saying Illmatic is five minutes shorter than Doris.

This is a case of hype machine versus rapper. This dude is good and here and there (even in his bragging) you can tell he's mentally sharp, especially with his writing. He's battling pressure all over this album, and it's commendable that he traversed all this Odd Future explosion, where is Earl?! Earl is back! What will Earl do?! talk by taking it head on. He doesn't really bend, either. A typical dude in this spot, you see him come out way hyped up, and maybe he meets expectations, but still feeds into/off of his hype like he's a part of it all. Earl just drops this personal, but not sappy, real type record with the same unorthodox flow and sound that makes him interesting above the rest. I'm about half way done with the album, and I like what he's doing. Fuck what 'the game' expected. By the sound of things, you might think some no name kid in his basement made this, and that's impressive given all the hype.

I agree. It opposes what Tyler the Creator did on his album, which sounded very much like the world around it. Earl is the most talented rapper in Odd Future, and he showed it.

Hold up

Illmatic has 10 perfectly crafted tracks with flawless seems ... it tells tales it has purposes substance and meaning

Doris has 16 tracks, some of which sound unfinished or as other dude said just short ... I'm not taken anything away from earl because in small doses he can sound brilliant but please never use illmatic in the same paragraph as any odd future artist album title . Ever . Its just disrepectful to music in general

They can but as far as substance earls doris is crafted more like a 90s punk rock album ... quick hit after quick hit .. I'm not sure earl had a track that tops the 4 minute mark but I know theirs one or two that are at least close

Nas album builds, every track had substance and meaning in the placement , each track had intros, bridges etc etc ..

Most if not all rap albums should be 45 minutes

That's a good point. I think this format plays to Earl's strengths. He blows me away with every verse, but he does sound the same most (maybe even all) of the time.

Short tracks break things up and let the listener get a breather from all the rhymes on rhymes.

Like I said earl is on point most of the time. .. no hate for the new scene but monotone is boring after 5 tracks short or not...

Luckily he put some good features on that change the pace a bit

Its like jay ... jay switches his flow like 3 times an album but its always at a critical point were you thought you could of gotten board then he spits quick or has that blow away feature... otherwise jay has a usual laid back flow

All earl is missing is a small flow change now and again and he's on point

Biggie is a prime example he made the lazy flow famous but puff new he had to llace the cd with 4 upbeat bangers and then let the interludes and bigs genius do the rest

Biggie knew that too that's why he did the fast track with bone on his second lp
