I think it's off to a good start.
It has the feel of a "movie thriller" almost... compared to most of the garbage TV out there today, this will be one the few I'll keep sticking with for a minute... Of the 3 series i stick to, it has a good chance to pan out like this: SOA > The Following > Walking Dead. just imo, obviously The Following needs to keep it going for a minute, but of the 3 that I dig enough to watch regularly - I can't see it supplanting Son's, but if it can maintain it's consistency, I could see it topping Walking Dead for me. (clearly dig all 3 enough to watch 'em, but WD has a couple episodes a season which bomb out of nowhere imo, then it picks it back up by introducing something else to the plot). But yea, I'd recommend givin this show a shot to anyone who hasn't checked it out yet. Good acting, solid foundation, and a surprisingly flexible plot -- it's the kind of show where you can hypothesis about 'who else is going to eventually be involved' episodes and maybe even seasons down the line; and they can just as easily 'rewrite' and take a specific character or even the entire plot in another direction. THAT is great writing for a "series" - when the storyline enables enough flexibility to "wrap it up effectively" if their ratings arent what they need to support the $$ payouts to the cast, consists of several 'sub-plots' to make the audience feel like they are "progressing with the story", and can be rewritten to have several series to come in the future if it becomes a very popular show.... I mean shit --- the stage is set for a few seasons down the line, where the writers could even decide, "okay, now that we've framed up the persuasive manipulation power of the mastermind killer - let's take the audience for a REAL FUCKING SPIN and, viola, KEVIN BACON becomes a follower. The original mastermind is finally put to death --- but Kevin Bacon, having been immersed in the serial killer's tactics, psychology, and literal execution for so many years that he finally makes way for the carnal beast in himself which we all have shades of --- and because of his intimate familiarity with the original killer, he is able to not only lead AS effectively BUT has the advantage of being on the "inside" with the fed for so long, that he can get in front of many of their tactics as well... Not only is that a very real opportunity for the writers (while probably unlikely I suppose), but it just goes to show how the best kind of writing can "effectively develop characters and plot" without inhibiting a change in creative direction down the line. Much longer analysis than I planned on or wish I spent time typing out - but hey, now that I got to this point in my response, might as well hit the 'ol 'post quick reply' button i guess lol. |

haven't even started watching this yet, read a review online and it sounded a bit Dexter-esque (not a bad thing, just not wholly original in my mind i guess since i watched it)
