I would love to do this battle finally, but I'm not giving frank the satisfaction of having me compete in a forced battle.

Truth be told I prefer savoury treats
as usual though you would go and save me a piece.
I still take it and eat it regardless from you
appreciating the deed, as any father should do.
It’s hard to refuse a gift from your child
imparted on you with an innocent smile.
I think for a while on how much that you’ve grown
in the blink of an eye, not just in your clothes,
but in your own independence as well
You no longer approach me to give you my help.
You can think for yourself, an entrepreneurial soul,
but the most innocent, selfless, little girl that I know.
Your birthday had shown me a lot in the way
you preferred not to go for a chocolate cake.
It’s a popular favourite but you ignored it because
You wanted one made of victoria sponge.
You call it a Crumb Cake, but I get what you mean
always a summer of strawberries wedged in between
with fresh extra cream every kid wants to bite in
embedded beneath rosettes of pink frosted icing.
Rich.
Soft.
Inviting.
You tried something different
picked one you liked, and built a lifelong tradition.
You stood by your decision and for that I’m in awe —
never mind what they’re think because you have my support.
It only adds to your story. The cake had took effort
but with dad in your corner, we made it together.
It tastes even better knowing we were involved
and the fruit of our latest endeavour sweetens it all.
You’ve seen that there’s more to a cake being made
than just ingredients poured in for flavour and taste.
You have to make sure you’re patient and give it a minute
in a way it’s the same as you bringing up children.
If you begin with the right method, one follows the other,
so stick to your instincts and soften the butter.
What I’ve discovered is a little warmth and tenderness gets
both phenomenal colour and the freshest of eggs.
With everything set out beforehand the planning will help
remember the self-raising flour so it can stand for itself.
It’s a craft.
It’s a celebration.
It’s hard work.
It’s a challenge.
If it doesn’t pan out so well, you still learn from what happens.
Nobody’s perfect and having mistakes is inevitable
but if you keep working the batter, then you’ll get a result.
Never give up on your goals to succeed,
when it gets tough — It’s time to roll up your sleeves.
I know it can feel like you may need more attempts
but don’t be defeated, you can always repeat it again.
All you need is perseverance,
Hard work means more than just skill.
The recipe for success isn’t taught, it’s instilled.
