Not really my thing but the other day I heard about a certain Denver Bronco's captain? Who in the 90's agreed to play an entire season season for free, so the funds could be used to strengthen the team and push for a Super Bowl win. They went on to win it that year. I thought that was pretty fucking sick. Could you imagine a player (in any major team sport) going to that length? I can't. Players would sooner strike than make a gesture like that.

Anyone know the name of that player?

I also heard he was or is running for President?

John Elway?

It was his last chance to win a Super Bowl. And he was a Quaterback not captain.

john elway was the QB

im disappointed in you guys. you guys dont remember terell davis? mile high salute? dude was a boss, if it wasnt for him elway would be marino with shittier stats

but yea i dunno he might have played for free, i just didnt know about it, and i doubt he's running for president. he is the president or head of operations of the denver broncos now tho

i know there qb NOW, peyton manning, got paid the minimum awhile back while on the colts so they could beef up there team

and joe flacco the qb of the ravens got his contract structured so it wont affect the salary cap for a few years, so his team can get talent in other spots, and him and the team have plans on restructuring it in the future so they can keep being competitive in free agency

but word dont know where you heard this

also you can just say football in thread titles for future reference.

It was a significant pay cut

By agreeing to restructure his contract, Elway saved the team $3.1 million against the salary cap for this season and provided the room to sign Smith. As a result Elway's base salary this year will be less than $600,000, making him one of the league's lowest-paid starting quarterbacks. "That guy always bails out this team," says defensive end Dan Williams. "He'd do anything to help this team win." Smith will do his part too. His six-sack total last season was his lowest since 1988, his rookie year, but would have ranked second on the '96 Broncos. "Not only will he be helping us," Elway points out, "but now we don't have to face him twice a year either."

esp in the 90s

players didn't get a 10th of what they get now they wouldn't have gave up the nothing they already got for literally nothing

and 97-98 are there only sbs so the players would have to be either shannon sharpe, terrelle davis, john elway, bill romanowski, ed mccaffrey, john mobley, ray crockett, keith traylor, steve stwater

Yeah taking a pay cut isn't that big of a deal. Players do it all the time. I'm nearly 100% certain the guy said "for free" that's what stuck out. Otherwise I wouldn't have bothered with the thread. And 600 thousand a year is hardly peanuts.

he was prolly saying like compared to what he should have gotten

like basically for free

I would never take a paycut, not in today's world of sports
