My first Rap Tape was Easier said than done by Easy E. Dope record but that ain't what did it.

Phrenology by the Roots

Nothing groundbreaking, but it was the first time I really heard the rhythm section matter in a hip hop setting. A lot of those tracks are good as instrumentals

Phrenology is a classic.

Big Boi and Dre Present...OutKast for me. Bought after hearing Ms. Jackson. Basically a greatest hits album with a few new songs. Still my favorite rap artist/group to this day.

Liquid Swords up there too.

Bought illmatic after awhile and thought it was shit. Only listened to NY State of Mind. Can confirm it's good now tho.

I agree with i am....but liked illmatic better than it was written.

I think illmatic is considered his best album just because at the time it was released ppl were so caught off guard by his talents. By the time I Am dropped kats knew esco was incredible and expected that type of material from him

honestly i was always and am still am of the jayz camp....i really never even heard illmatic till the internet. most of us can remember how difficult it was to get music without it i would think. plus i was still a child so that involved convincing my parents to buy me these wildly offensive albums with their money. really i was only getting a handful of albums a year MAYBE plus it wasn't nearly as saturated as it is now......it wouldnt even be a new rap album out every month.

but yea i mean I AM dropped when i was like a freshman in highschool and it was a big deal. then jayz and nas beef popped off a couple years later and that's when i was like....ok nas....i suppose i need to listen to all of your music since u just ripped out my super heros heart. i still maintain jay won the war....pretty positive that's a general consensus at this point but word that was when nas became really relevant to me.

I distinctively remember not just hearing but where I was and loving "Tha Crossroads"(the days of waiting for the radio to play the song and record it on a tape) & the music video for "If I ruled the World" on Rap City.

So I guess Bone & Nas were my first hip-hop obsessions. Also remember my family being stationed in Dover, De for a brief period of time and my dad telling me "We are from the east coast don't ever choose 2pac over Biggie." LOL
