python is definitely still in use. if anything its java that's phasing out.
but a basic bg in c and c++ will help you no matter what you end up doing with computers. whether you decide to go the networking route or the information security route or the software dev route or the web dev route or the system architecture route or or or. then, after you put this class behind you and depending on how ambitious you are, you can dive into fun, expressive languages like ruby (my personal bias) or functional languages like haskell and scala.
