Measure of Men

"Stare down the arrow track" - the professor breathily whispered
"And just aim for the body, my patented venemous tips
will force the lungs to a deadly constriction." Such tenure and wisdom
I thought, as the jaguar snapped back and died. The rest went and scattered
"Only one, old boy?" The professor was suppressing his laughter
"Well, I ended the bastard-" Suddenly, interrupted by a basilisk strike
It was the black as the night, I recalled the eyes of my mother
Passage from a life to the other-
- was made no easier by the size of it's teeth
Especially that middle one, good lord... wait. A sigh of relief
It vanished. The creature crumpled to the sides of my feet
And I saw the professor, his red sword & bloodied skin
His knowing eyes, and of course- that fucking grin.

I met Professor Adrian Dardonic in my third year of school
The first words he said "Son, listen: fear is a fool.
The future is a dark jungle - you won't light it by reading
and Time is a vicious animal that's dying to eat you."
Later he'd show me a map - to an Eastern Temple
That would fulfill the greatest dreams of your sleeping mental
I packed what I deemed essential - the professor burned it all
Said I'd find what I need before we reached the walls
Later. On the airboat, he said in a hushed, dreamy tone
"There are dark secrets here, boy, that only the trees can know-
Men have been gone insane, became one with the darkness
God has nothing to do with this place, boy, this place is heatless."
And if he does, well, I know he likes to limit his favor
Because we crashed the boat and went ashore a few minutes later.

Weeks later- weakened by the schemes of this dream chaser
Eating tough meat - pupils amble like screen savers
"We're east slayers, jungle lords!" He'd cheerily tell me
So I'd forget my diet of jaguar and mysterious berry's
I was nearing resentment - blood taught me everything dries
The thrill of a laundry cycle comprised ending a life
And then onward we went, into the night - approaching our goal
Just mere hours away, or so I was told
I never felt close to this unapproachable pagoda of gold
I could feel the jungles gloats and its crows - and this magnetic aura
Sourced to a shape emerging from excessive darkness

"How can you fight any longer? The jungle is daunting"
An eerie voice whispered, sounded troubled and haunting
"Embrace the jungle. Exist among the predator food chain.
Forget the temple
Learning to live with the jungle's the true game."
"Nonsense - the professor said, staring deep in the somber pupils
Of our encounter. & Suddenly I caught a glimpse of all my future
I made a decision, who to follow, how to set my life ablaze
& until death I chose how to survive in this wild maze.
I picked up my crossbow, looked down with precision
Pulled back the string and made the easy decision
