Actually, if you grow up in a culture that beats it into your head that you need to have this to be perceived a certain way, and you buy it, despite the fact that you can get the exact same materials for half the price, then you are brainwashed. Companies spend their money hiring psychologists and sociologists who use manipulative advertising techniques that make you want to buy what you buy.
